The birth of 491 blues.
Formed in December 2004. From that day to March 2006, Tony spent many months searching for, playing with and trying out musicians so he would get the sound and style he felt was needed for 491 blues to succeed. The band finally came together on 4th May '06', when Harry our blues harpist joined and filled the fifth and final place in the band. So with Tony on drums, Brian singing and playing rhythm guitar, Adrian on lead guitar, Charlie on Bass guitar and Harry on blues harp, practising in earnest began. Within a few weeks we had a good range of numbers under our belts, were pleased with the sound and were gelling really well as a team. Charlie has since retired, his final gig at The Rose in Biggleswade, and we wish him well and hope he will come to see us and keep in touch. His place has been taken by Dave.
We practice in Stevenage every week and are available to gig all over the Home Counties and London (well anywhere really). Our play list is extensive with covers varying from old to modern blues, some originals and the occasional musical surprise.
We are often asked where the '491' came from. Tony's eldest son Craig lives in Japan. Tony and his family visit him every year and often when they stayed in Yokohama would visit a bar called '491'. Just inside the entrance on the wall, is a newspaper article. The article describes a stone in Ephesus, Turkey, which is 4 metres high, 9 meters long and 1 metre thick. The article goes on to explain that Mary Magdalene, spent her last days in Ephesus and would pray at the wall and rub olive oil into it. It is now believed that anyone who does the same, will find happiness. Tony's youngest son Gary, suggested the name. So, we hope that our music will bring you happiness.
Brian has performed at venues all over the country in a musical career that spans four decades from punk rock in the '70s to 491 Blues in the ‘noughties. His greatest quality is consistency - he's consistently crazy, emotional, irrational, briliant, useless, egotisitcal, shy and totally wasted.
Adrian, Playing guitar since he was 14, he's played a wide variety of genres besides the blues, including folk, jazz rock and heavy rock. He claims blues is one sort of folk song and rock is only blues with added voltage .
Harry's music career kicked off in the early 60's when he joined a band singing jazz and blues numbers in and around the Home Counties. More recently he has played blues harp (harmonica) in country bands and jammed with other musicians. He is now enjoying every minute gigging with his friends in 491 blues.
Dave replaced Charlie who was a founder member of 491 blues, in September 2007. Dave is an accomplished musician having played in various bands and now enjoying a new adventure in his continuing musical career.
Tony, our drummer, began drumming at the age of 4. He was a founder member and manager of Chord on Blues, the originator of 491 blues and shows great dedication to the band by managing as well as playing the drums.
