A Perfect Circle was formed by rock group, Tool’s, vocalist Maynard
James Keenan and former Tool guitar technician, Billy Howerdel. The
group, which is considered by critics to be an extension of Tool,
actually is not. A Perfect Circle is less dark than Tool. The group
focuses more on melodies and unusual instruments especially strings. A
Perfect Circle’s main fan base consists of young intellectual college
students. The group chose their name before the first show they played.
They picked A Perfect Circle from a line out of one of their songs.
The history of A Perfect Circle begins in 1996 when Tool released Aenima.
During this time, Tool was experiencing difficulties with their former
label; Freewood Entertainment. The battle lasted until 1998. At that
time, the band felt considerably tired and decided to take time off. It
was at this point that Keenan, Howerdel, and Paz Lenchantin formed A
Perfect Circle.
Keenan and Howerdel’s relationship dates back to 1992 when the two met
while Tool was opening for Fishbone. Howerdel was Fishbone’s technician.
Keenan played a few of his songs for Howerdel and the two discussed a
possible collaboration in the future. So, when Tool ceased in order to
take a break; the two did just that. Keenan is vocals, Howerdel is on
the guitar, Lenchantin plays the bass. After awhile, the trio recruited
former member of Failure and Enemy; Troy Van Leeuwen to play the guitar.
Josh Freese (former member of Guns N’ Roses and Vandals) plays the
drums. The group began rehearsing, but they decided to not go public.
Although there was no announcement of the newly formed group, rumors
spread and there was much anticipation for an album.
On August 15, 1999 the group had their first performance. They played at
Johnny Depp’s posh club, The Viper Room, in Los Angeles, California. A
Perfect Circle’s debut album, Mer de Noms, was released on May 23, 2000.
The album’s title is French for Sea of Names. The album has the highest
debut on the Billboard Chart (four) for a newly created band. Critics
call Mer de Noms phenomenal. The first single entitled, “Judith,” was
written by Keenan in one sitting late at night. Other singles from the
album are “3 Libras” and “Rose.” A Perfect Circle went on The Somersault
Tour in 2000. They joined artists such as the Foo Fighters, Smashing
Pumpkins, and Eve 6.
Shortly after touring with A Perfect Circle, Keenan re-convened with
Tool to create their album, Lateralus. The album was a hit in 2001. On
September 16, 2003 A Perfect Circle released Thirteenth Step. The album’s
first single was “Weak and Powerless,” During 2003, A Perfect Circle
toured.
