Afenginn biography
Afenginn was formed in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2002 by five musicians with very different musical backgrounds. With their different angles of music, the result is an original and virtuoso music that grows out of the roots of world and folk music. They soon realized that reality and conformity not was their cup of tea and saddled the horse of joy and madness (which they have been riding ever since). With high tempo, great joy and border seeking musical ideas the taking of Denmark was founded with the music to the film "Elgen kommer" (The moose are coming!) and later on with the release of the debutalbum "Retrograd".
In addition to many positive reviews, Retrograd also received a Danish Music Award for "Best World Album" in 2005. The debutalbum has so far been honoured with critics as: "They are shockingly good, with imagination and technique that won't quit. If there's justice, they'll be huge." (fROOTS, March 2006) and "For one times sake I have to take off my hat!...and the rest of the clothes as well." (Kultunaut, November 2004).
Afenginn's homebrewed compositions and unique style has been categorized as bastard-ethno, with a sigh of Nordic melancholy and a twist of cheerful madness. We are talking a twilight zone, where also Tom Waits, Gogol Bordello, Tiger Lillies and Kaizers Orchestra can be found.
With the release of their second album "Akrobakkus" in 2006, Afenginn has purified and developed their style. The album has guest musicians in the multitalented actor Zlatko Buric and the gipsy cimbalom virtuoso George Mihalache. Like the debutalbum, "Akrobakkus" has recieved very positive critics from the start: "No one can be unaffected by a meeting with Afenginn. Some may run away like holwing wolves, but those who still got a little elixir of life left running in your veins, will somehow get reneved strength. Try it yourself." (Folk og Musik, 2006)
The group has so far toured actively in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Faroe Islands, Germany, Belgium, Estonia, Switzerland and played over 200 concerts in the past years. |
