Biography

So how exactly did AFI (aka A Fire Inside) get started? Well, it all started off in Ukiah, California when Davey Havok (vocals) and his friend Markus Stopholese (guitar) were eating lunch and just decided to start a band, none of them knowing how to play any instruments. Well, it was soon agreed on by fellow members Adam Carson (drums) and Vick (bass), and AFI was officially formed in early 1991. They took much influence from bands like The Misfits and The Cure, which is the hybrid that caressed AFI. They released their first EP entitled Behind the Times. And shortly after, Vick left the band and wqas replaced by Geoff Kresge. Well, basically the band somewhat split up and moved away for college. It wasn't until 1992 that they returned for a re-union show in California. They felt so much energy from the crowd, and so much enthusiasm, that they decided to forget school and focus mainly on the band. AFI released their first full-length album in 1993 entitled Answer That and Stay Fashionable, which was re-releaed in 1995 by Nitro Records. The band eventually started to work on a second album and the final outcome came to be Very Proud of Ya. AFI seemed to be going strong with already 2 full-length albums under their belt, until soon after Geoff Kresge left the band for personal reasons (later joined the band Tiger Army). This was right about the time AFI was working on a 3rd album and because Geoff quit so suddenly, the band had to ask The Force for their bassisst Hunter Burgan to fill on for Geoff on the 3rd album. Which he soon after joined the band anyway. Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes was released in 1997. During this time, Markus Stopholese left the band in favor of ex-Redemption 87 guitarist Jade Puget. Jade come onboard and the band recorded Fire Inside EP and Black Sails in the Sunset. This was the album that changed AFI's state from being a thrashy punk rock band to a more goth-alternative sound. The band later recorded All Hallow's EP in October 2000 and then Art of Drowning in the end of 2000, and then got a Dreamworks Record label and recorded Sing the Sorrow in 2003. Sing the Sorrow became a mainstream record with its 3 radio-friendly singles "Girl's Not Grey", "Silver and Cold", and "The Levaing Song Part 2". This was rumored to be AFI's last album. But, shortly after, while on tour promoting Sing the Sorrow, Davey developed a chyst and asked to cancel 10 shows from the tour or he would possibly permanently damage his vocal chords. Well, during that time, the band was forced to write new material. So it looks as if another album (or more) will be made. Side projects include Hunter's own classical/jazz music Hunter Revenge, Davey's goth/industrial band Son of Sam, and soon to be Davey and Jade's side project Blaqk Audio which is suppoused to be just computers, no instruments.

A.F.I. musically soulful. I think A.F.I. is one of the most soulful bands of our time. Their lyrics are so beautiful. Their like poems with life. Davey Havok's voice singing the songs generates alot of feeling.	Lilybell_Ferrington

davey's gotten moer poetic over the years, but i really like "brownie bottom sundae" (one of davey's first songs that he wrote (that was on an album at least)) and i think God called in sick today is very well-written another one of daveys best...also one of my favorite lines is in the despair factor i like how you can hear jade (correct me if i'm wrong but i think it's jade) saying in the back "...my whole life is a dark room (everything goes silent)...one...big...dark...room...(guitar slash)"	BLASTT
