Formed in 2001 in the wake of boybands and teen pop idols, the original lineup of Airborn came together for one reason: the joys of playing live music. Originally concieved as just another high school pipedream, the founding members were desperate right from the start to play for audiences, big or small. The original members Justin Bonfini (guitar), Jordan Finch (bass), and Joel Kehoe (drums) picked up their instruments, and right from the beginning knew that music was something they could make their own.
Inspired by the punk rock bands of their early teen years, the three soon began working on a list of cover songs to which they could all relate, and more important, that others could relate to. The relationship between the band and the listeners is not lost on this group.
Soon after coming together, the young band was offered its first showcase, and, like most new bands, it was local. Not only that, but it was personal. As graduates of a local school, the three were offered a slot to play during the school's annual Fair Fun Day, for students, teachers, and parents. Though the smallest of small venues, the boys were thrilled, and jumped at the opportunity.
However, the three thought that they would need some backup in order to really pull off the kind of performance they were after. So they recruited to extra members for the show: Matt Dusenbury and Anthony Mascarin. Matt would back Justin up on guitar, and the two new additions would split the vocal duties. After some rehersals with this new lineup, the boys were ready for their first showing in front of family, friends, and more importantly, strangers.
The first show was a huge success. The two sets the boys played went off without a hitch, and those who were listening enjoyed the boys' catchy cover songs and humorous banter. This special first performance was caught on home video cameras, and sheds light on the band's earliest of early years.
However, once the show was complete, changes were made. Matt parted from the group and went off to form a competing band with other high school friends. Airborn continued as a four-piece group, playing several shows in the Toronto area to great response, despite the group's young age.
But, after 2 years of this, another member would come to leave. Like Matt, Anthony would leave to form his own band, leaving Airborn's guitar, and especially vocal duties, to the remaining three members.
However, despite these blows, the band continued to strive for their dream. Justin practiced often to learn every bit of guitar work, and both he and Jordan spent hours working on their singing abilities. Eventually this hard work payed off, and by 2005, the band went into the studio. What they came out with was "Rock-It Science", a 6-song EP showcasing the band in its new form. No longer bound by their limited abilities, the band had arranged a tightly-knit set of originals that dealt with personal issues of the band members, from the leaving members, to the trials and tribulations of high school and teen life. All of which was combined with explosive drums, catchy guitar riffs, and dance-able bass hooks.
The band continued to play a string of shows following the release of thier EP in Toronto and the GTA, building up a following of friends and family, drawing more people than they even thought possible to shows. Unfortunately, this would not last.
In the late fall of 2006, Justin told the rest of the band that he would no longer be playing with Airborn. Citing musical differences, Justin would be changing camps, instead becoming the second guitarist of former-member Anthony Mascarin's new band "Outspoken". The other two members were devastated by this blow, and a long break of the band followed Justin's departure so the remaining members could decide on their future as a band.
However, a light appeared at the end of the tunnel. While attending college in London, Ontario, Joel began spending more and more time with Matt, as he was one of the few childhood friends who was also in London, attending the University of Western Ontario. Upon the news of Justin's departure from the band, the two members began entertaining the idea of playing with one another. At first, it was only for fun, as a way to pass the time in the basement on the weekends. However, talks soon followed about linking up with Jordan at the culmination of the school year, to practice some classic covers of bands that the three grew up listening to.
The summer soon came, and after only a few days of being home, the three got together and began playing as a group. Though Matt had not been a part of the band for several years, the three remained close friends, and the strong relationship and similar musical tastes led to the revitalization of Airborn.
The newly-energized three-piece has been through a lot in its short existence, but the band has always maintained through the struggles. Ready to take on the music scene again, not as kids, but as a full-fledged band, Airborn is looking to start the slow climb to the top of the music scene. |
