Although he is a superstar in Germany after winning German Idol, 19 year old Alexander Klaws still lives at home with his mother, father, and sister: Melanie. As a child, Klaws always knew he wanted a career in music. He learned piano early on, and as a teenager played in various rock and pop bands. With his good looks and nice voice, he took the German Idol title without difficult. In March 2002, 13 million viewers tuned in to watch Klaws win German Idol with an amazing 70% of the votes.
Soon after his win, Klaws released his debut single entitled “Take Me Tonight.” The single has since sold 1.1 million copies. He then released his debut album, Take Your Chance, which is a mix of R&B, pop, and rock. The album’s singles, “Stay With Me” and “Free Like the Wind,” have done very well in Germany. Recently, the young singer has appeared on the soundtrack for a German film in which he sings, “Held Der Gladiatoren” (Hero of the Gladiators). Klaws’s fan book entitled Ich Bin – Alexander (It’s ME –Alexander) has sold over 30,000 copies.
On Boxing Day 2003, Alexander appeared on the World Idol competition. The show, which was filmed at Wembley Stadium in London, was broadcasted in 22 countries. Alexander sang a cover of the 80s song, “Maniac.” Judges were definitely not impressed. Although a superstar in Germany, it was easy to realize that Alexander’s vocal ability was not up to par to the other competitors.
The second part of World Idol occurred on New Years Day 2004. Audiences were disappointed in the judges treatment of the competitors. The creators of the television show admitted that there was a great deal of editing due to the harshness of judges. Although Alexander did not place well in the competition, the show enabled him to be introduced to an international public.
