| Anarkinda began in the college town of Houghton, Michigan as a response to the lack of ska in the area. Randy Enk, vocals, and Nathan Wiley, saxophone, began the search for the people that would eventually form Anarkinda. They enlisted members from a former local ska band Todd Bonham on trombone and Austen Smith on bass guitar. Kurt Bonham, an accomplished drummer, was recommended by his brother Todd. To find a guitarist, the almost completed group relied on responses to flyers that were posted around the MTU campus. After several responses and a few auditions, Bret Self was set on guitar.
With a complete group assembled, Anarkinda, who had already gone through several names, began to just have fun playing music in the dorm basement. The group would just jam together and this led to the creation of many songs. After several weeks of getting started, they were invited to play as the opening act for a show at a new local venue. Dressed in a hodgepodge of odd dress shirts, suit coats, and ties, and armed with several well practiced but undebuted songs, Anarkinda played what would be the first of dozens of shows in the following months. Anarkinda made appearances at any place that wanted a band to play. They played at bookstores, skate parks, coffee shops, living rooms, front lawns, basements, and even live on the radio with 91.9fm WMTU.
Even with their hectic schedules and sometimes multiple shows per night, Anarkinda still debuts new songs on a regular basis to give dedicated fans something to look forward to. Look out for more to come from this entertaining group of ska musicians. Keep an ear open for the ska styling of Anarkinda coming to a stage, club or living room near you.
