CHAPTER 1 (1995 – 1998):
The band was started by Eddie Risdal (Vox/guitar) and Kjell-Ivar Aarli (Bass/vox) under the name Permafrost in December 1995. The idea was to start a black metal band, mainly influenced by bands like Ulver, Darkthrone, Sacramentum, Dissection etc. A creative period from spring 1996 until autumn 1997 resulted in a lot of tunes, some of them to be heard on our first demo released in 2000. Later the band got into an inactive period until…
CHAPTER 2 (1998 – 2002):
Late 1998 Oeyvind Rosseland joined the band as a keyboardist/guitarist, and the band naturally turned more melodic and symphonic direction. When we had created some more songs we recorded our first demo, simply called Ancestral Legacy in 2000. It contained 3 songs from the early days as well. Thomas Bie and Stefan Hammer Knutsen joined the band late 2000 on guitar and drums respectively, but both left a few months later due to military service and moving to another town. With this line-up we recorded the song Emptiness, which was included on the Norwegian sampler “Blackmetal compilation 2001” along with bands like Lunaris and 1349. In spring 2002 we recorded our 2nd demo, called Emptiness. It contained re-recorded versions of the above mentioned song as well as 3 from our first demo and 5 new tracks.
CHAPTER 3 (2002 - ):
Shortly after the Emptiness-demo our keyboardist quitted the band, and we were facing a crossroad; should we try to get a new keyboardist or simply go on without? Definitely the easiest thing to do was not to replace him. As we come from a small town it means that good quality synthists that are into metal are hard to find. One other thing that made the decision easier was that Eddie had created a couple of songs that didn’t fit too well into the symfo-black style we had. In the summer 2002 drummer Boerre Iversen from a local cover band was asked if he would join Ancestral Legacy. He heard the new songs and immediately showed great enthusiasm, so finally we had got a real drummer again. But more was yet to come…
As more tunes were created it seemed more and more clear that we needed someone who actually was able to sing on some parts of the songs, and the natural choice was Elin Anita Omholt who plays together with Eddie in the rock band Miasma Paradox. In the beginning the plan was only to lend her duties on recordings, but has now turned into a permanent place in the band. Tor Arvid Larsen who played with Børre in the above mentioned cover band was recruited as a 2nd guitarist in December 2002, and the line-up was complete. Or almost… Our bassist hadn’t the right spirit anymore, and was never to be seen on rehearsals, so in March 2003 we asked Anton Dead from the local rock band Flown to do the bass. This only strengthened the band, as he has lots of experience and skills and has even played session bass for Covenant / The Kovenant. So one can say that the 2003 line-up is the strongest in the more than 7 year long history of this band! Our third demo, Of magic illusions, was recorded February – April 2003 and contains one intro and 7 songs that maybe can be described as a mix of influences from old Theatre of tragedy (but without synth), Opeth, Lacuna coil and Novembre, to name a few. The response has been very good, despite the style change from the last demo. In November the same year we recorded a new demo, mostly for our own satisfaction. The only new song was “The last goodbye”, and the others were a re-recording of the older track “Emptiness” plus some covers of Amorphis, Nightwish and Rapture (oddly only Finnish bands...). The demo was released in November. In December we took part in a concert weekend in Kristiansand, Norway, where 25 unsigned bands from all over the southermost part of Norway played. We were chosen to be the ones to get free studio time in one of the region’s best studios, and we recorded our last demo, called “Goodbye Reality” in Lynor studios in March 2004. In February 2005 we participated in the biggest festival/showcase event in Norway, called by:Larm. A promo video for the track "Crash of silence", shot at various locations around our area was released as a DVD including a making of and a short documentary from a festival we played.
Drummer Boerre Iversen left the band late 2005 and got replaced by Johan Raana spring 2006. Raana was again replaced by Christopher Vigre the same autumn.
Recording of a new album was started summer 2007, but not finished until January 2008. Also the release plan was increased to also include an EP with the song that don't make it to the album. |
