Friday, December 26th, 2008 12/22/08- TOT recap...hap happiest season of all I'd like to let out a big "WHEW!!"
I'm loving being back in my own place right now---this past season of touring has been great and very adventurous, but there truly is NO place like home. (except chickfila. that's kinda like home to me)
Today I've been rearranging all my furniture, stray papers, sweeping....i feel like mary poppins or something. it feels good to know that I'm going to be in one place for a while.....I get to buy groceries for the whole week, put my clothes in my drawers instead of keeping them in a suitcase.....re-meet my new neighbor (who may actually not remember what my face looks like, since, during our first encounter, he carried on the entire conversation while thumbing through his blackberry. how rude.)
ANYWAY, The Ten Out of Tenn Tour was amazing, and deserves a true recap. Great memories were once again created....friendships deepened....sleep patterns abused....
Here are a few of my personal highlights from the TOT Christmas tour:
1. the chicago show---8 inches of snow outside, wreaths and lights covering a venue that kinda looks like a giant fireplace....wintry cab rides to random post-show dance club....
2. MAFIA--on our day off in cleveland, it was too cold to go outside, so the entire TOT crew played the game "Mafia" in 1 hotel room. I'd played this game before with friends....but never with 10 lead singers with personalities through the roof. Cheap wine and pizza helped turn characters into caricatures.....it was truly hilarious. My strategy was to be stone-faced the entire time....The game requires you to tell believable lies.....but also when you're telling the truth, other people get suspicious of who is lying, etc.....Can't tell the good guys from the bad guys. My award for best acting performance by a covert Mafia member goes to Will Sayles, TOT's drummer, who had me second guessing that I was actually telling the truth. Kudos, Sayles.
3. NYC day off--N.O. Jazz--We all got a day off in NYC after the show there---I had to fly solo to get to a few meetings, so after the meetings were done, I was kind of on my own til after dinner. I decided to treat myself to a nice dinner, so I went to Sushi Samba in the east village area, sat at the sushi bar, and ordered Chilean Sea Bass. dat was some good bass. seriously. So then, I walked across the intersection to this tavern/pub...(Arthur's Tavern, I believe?)---and MUCH to my delight, I walked in on some legit New Orleans jazz music.....clarinet, cornet, trombone, piano, drums, bass.....all being played by these 70-year old guys. Apparently they've been doing this gig every monday night for 30 years. There were actually newspaper clippings there from 30 years ago about these guys. I ordered a Guinness and sat waiting for the rest of the TOT crew......probably my favorite moment of the tour. In the bar, all these 65+ gray-headed kids were bopping and smiling and dancing like the charlie brown cartoons. pretty magical
4. Lost my sunglasses in GA.....at least that's where I think they got lost. If anyone finds a pair of black ray bans, they're mine.
5. Knoxville---I think the knoxville crowd might get the spirit award---that was an amazing night---The Square Room gets the hospitality award for treating us like royalty. I may try to play there 35 times this next year if I can get a steak dinner every time.
6. Secret Santa--so we decided to do secret santa amongst the TOT crew. the plan was to get your secret person something every day, then something bigger at the end. I forgot to buy something the first day, but then I found a volume knob that broke off an amp at a club and thought it would make a cool necklace. then i couldn't find a string to put it on, so I just hid the volume knob in my secret santa person's bunk. but i think i hid it too well. So they probably felt sad that day. maybe i was just trying to teach him a life lesson---start off disappointed and everything seems awesome after that. (tim, don't believe that). eventually we found out who our secret santa person was.....mine ended up being katie herzig....who secretly gave me a smorgasbord of thoughtful items....a fish pen, gum, a men's health magazine, a music box, snacks from whole foods, and one of my favorite things in the world, a moleskin journal. I seriously have trouble not buying one every time i'm in a borders or barnes and noble. thank you katie.
7. concerts---all the shows were really a blast. i got to play french horn which was fun. although i don't think there's a cool way to hold a french horn. you always feel like a band nerd. plus the way you have to purse your lips makes you look like a member of parliament. (not the funkadelic kind--the british kind) i tried dancing a bit or kinda hunching over to "put out the vibe" while playing.......anyway, we'll see if french horn catches on now in the indie circles....
so thanks for coming to shows if you came to a show---there are rumors of a West coast TOT run this spring.....
I'm excited to be home finishing songs and recording some new stuff--i visited a friend over at blackbird studios in nashville yesterday---walking around the studio.....I felt like a grizzly bear on an empty stomach, taking a tour of a......meat...plant....or a place where they make food that bears love. YOU KNOW. I'm ready to get back into that environment pronto. hoping to put out some new music early in 09
ok folks......enjoy your holidays---more updates after christmas---peace and goodwill to all

Alternative pop songster Andy Davis returns this fall with his piano and soaring falsetto for his first full-band LP. Recorded in 10 days in Los Angeles with legendary producer Mitchell Froom (Sheryl Crow, Los Lobos, Elvis Costello, Crowded House, Randy Newman), "Let The Woman" is a collection of songs that separates Davis from the crowd.
Earning comparisons from Ben Folds to Paul Simon to Badly Drawn Boy, as well as the classic story-centered songwriting of Billy Joel, this Nashville-based 25-year-old embraces a range of times, influences and genres, his distinctive melodies and infectious layered vocals anchored by personal yet universal lyrics.
Andy has recently signed a deal with bigHelium records and Barnes & Noble, who will exclusively release and promote "Let The Woman" this fall in their more than 700 stores located throughout the United States.
Look for Andy Davis on tour through the summer and fall, and pick up a copy of "Let The Woman" -- on sale at Barnes & Noble Booksellers and at www.bn.com. The album also just released to iTunes on February 5th! |

well well well
so i just finished this 2.5 week tour---i had the whole band out with me, plus my friend Seth Philpott opening....here are some of my favorite highlights:
-playing house of blues in chicago the same night as Usher (he brought a girl out of the audience onstage and fed her strawberries, then she gave him a lap dance. pretty crazy. entertaining to say the least.)
-a cool pub in muncie, IN that made me feel like i was at a ski lodge in germany.
-cabin: (we had 3 days off between shows, so we all went to a friend's cabin in the TN mountains to chill for a few days. sitting in a hot tub in 25 degree weather, in pitch black, looking up at millions of stars....pretty amazing. Realizing that there are 5 other guys (i.e. 50 other male toes) in that same hot tub....not as amazing.
-baton rouge: the place of my birth. also some good bbq
-fun show in austin, tx, followed by 5 hours of meandering around 6th street.....getting onstage with some random funk band (3 members were these old motown-ish cool cats...large, old, black men, but the guitarist looked like the sleazy, rockstar shredder guy that replaced jack black in school of rock. guitar hero should hire this guy for the cover of the game.) Anyway, i remember singing mustang sally, some stevie ray vaughn song, and lets get it on.
-waco--fun as always.....outdoor theatre venue.....afterparty that included a dance marathon to the entire Justice album. followed by 12 hours of sleep and waking up to realize i might be sick.
-off day in dallas to celebrate seth's birthday. we told some girls in a bar that it was seth's bday, and they all 3 decided to attack him in highly inappropriate ways. we laughed and took pictures.
So that's about it. It was pretty sad to go separate ways with my tourmates, affectionately known as the NARB 6.
So now it's Thanksgiving---I have another week after this to rest, recover from being sick, and finish a few new songs, then i'm back out on the highway with the Ten out of Tenn crew for our Christmas tour. (myspace.com/tenoutoftenn search for Ten out of Tenn on iTunes--the christmas CD just came out).
Until the next check in, hope you guys have a great holiday season---be good boys and girls

| Friday, December 5th, 2008 10/22/2008- hello Wednesday, October 22, 2008
hello
blog blog blog
so i've been totally MIA from the blogosphere lately.....here's where i've been, where i'm going, and what i'm feeling at the moment.
-July & August: Ten out of Tenn Tour (www.myspace.com/tenoutoftenn), plus shows with Tyler Hilton
-Sept: out on tour with Need To Breathe (www.myspace.com/needtobreathe)
-Oct: out on tour with Matt Wertz (www.myspace.com/mattwertz), plus a week in LA for hotel cafe show and as much sunny fun i could fit in, then more touring with Matt Wertz
upcoming stuff:
-November: a handful of headlining shows with a full band (yes!!)
-December: a Christmas tour with the Ten Out Of Tenn crew.
So I say all that to say life has been crazy busy--and isn't quite slowing down yet. The traveling has been in the company of great people in some amazing cities and shows..... however, I'm kinda ready for at least a couple weeks of down time in Nashville.
Creatively, I feel about 8 and 1/2 months pregnant. When I travel and get inspired to write, I usually only have enough time to jot down random thoughts in hopes of turning them into full songs later. Those jots pile up over time.....i start feeling really antsy to get them down.....feel like if i wait too long i'll lose the initial inspiration......songs will be lost forever....
anyway, that's where i'm at right now. definitely feeling an urgency to get home and unpack my mental and physical jot pile.....
other highlights.....
-i got some awesome old school high tops on my recent trip to LA.
-a friend in LA also gave me a cool necklace that has an actual magnifying glass on it. and it works
-went to a birthday party in LA at a house with a massive sleigh bed in their backyard. pretty awesome. I forgot that it never rains in california
-Wertz heard my lyrics wrong and thought I was saying "band of bewilderment" instead of "vanderbilt women" (from the song Good Life). After brief sadness for him not know the lyrics to my song, I immediately realized the genius of that phrase, and have temporarily named my backing band, The Band of Bewilderment.
sooo......
until next blog, which hopefully will be from nashville next week. here's a pic from my awesome convertible on my LA trip. ps i think my family used to have a van like the one in the background when i was growing up. miniblinds and all. also, i was definitely breaking the law when i took this picture with my phone. in LA you're not allowed to talk on the phone in the car without a hands free headset, so i'm assuming phone pics while driving is also frowned upon.

TOT tour.....a recap of sorts.
friends. Ten Out of Tenn tour has come to an end. 15 days in a row, 16 shows....12 people on a bus....
I wanted to make a youtube video from the TOT tour....there was definitely tons and tons of video-able things happening....but I didn't. Basically, to work on editing a video would mean that I'd have to miss out on the fun.....and since the fun was nonstop, there was no time for editing.
Fun such as:
-passing out glowing mouthpieces after the NYC show and having a makeshift rave in the front lounge of the bus, blasting any upbeat Dylan songs we could find.
-trying to insert the phrase "TOT" into any sentence. (For example: "My TOT feels funny today." or "Uh oh....Tyler got some TOT last night!!" or "GO TOT yourself!" None of which make any sense.)
-watching certain non-female TOT tour members get pedicures at a random Walmart
-bribing the owner of a duckpin bowling alley in Indianapolis to stay open late so we could have the place to ourselves (This might be one of the top 3 memories). Duckpin bowling is like bowling from the 20s or something with small pins and bowling balls just bigger than softballs. Kinda like we were in the first Back to the Future, only with beer from 2008, and no clock tower to save.
-ongoing late night billiards tournaments (i owe all success to my billiards partner, butterfly boucher, who may be the best pool shark I've ever seen.)
-late night installments of the BBC series "North and South" during what I like to call TOTea Time. This is where myself, Katie Herzig, Butterfly, and drummer Will Sayles liked to retreat to the back lounge of the tour bus to remind ourselves that we are high-brow, classy individuals, with a taste for the finer things in life.....stories of propriety, historical fiction....and unrequited love. (Granted, we couldn't understand their accents and had to watch it in subtitles....and also I fell asleep a lot.) (Side note, Griffin House also joined TOTea Time occasionally, once being lulled to sleep by the rocking of the bus, his head landing gently on my shoulder for the remainder of the evening. Erm, the memories.)
-playing slide guitar on K.S. Rhoads' "Bayonet". This was probably the highlight of the set list for me every night. That's why people probably saw me dancing like a thug rapper with sunglasses on during that song. I was feelin it.
There are tons of other memories that I'm sure will hit me later.....but these were definitely worth mentioning.
LUCKILY, the entire tour was filmed, from morning til night. Literally 8 hours of footage a day. Special thanks to Jeff Wilson, for carrying around that camera all day long and capturing every embarrassing thing we did during the tour. You will be the richest man in Nashville based on blackmail footage.
So yes, there will be some videos coming out here and there from the tour.....plus eventually a concert documentary, a la The Last Waltz.....or perhaps we'll just save the footage til we're all superstars, and then title the movie, "Before The Were Legends."
Oh, and next time you get a rash on your TOT, don't scratch it.

spring tour is over.....
Just wanted to drop a paragraph or 2 to say hello---
first of all, thank you to all the people who came out to the shows on this past tour---we played 30 shows in 35 days.....pretty grueling to be honest. but it was awesome to have people pumped to hear music all the way through---very awesome.
I'm pretty pumped to be back in Nashville for a while..... I love traveling and playing shows, but it's really hard to write new material when you're in hotel rooms every night and spending most of the day on the interstate....
Right now I'm actually watching teenage mutant ninja turtles 3.....when they go back in time to feudal japan.....nice surprise to see some good shows on TV for a change. maybe i'll put out a ninja record this summer...
ok more soon--just wanted to check in and say thanks for everyone coming out to the shows over the past couple months---goodbye friends

on tour....new video fun.....hello.
Current mood: adventurous
Category: Music
well, i admit this probably concludes my longest blog silence in my myspace history......thank you guys for being patient---
I'm currently out on tour with my friend Dave Barnes.....we're doing about 30 shows over the course of 35 days.....pretty jam packed. we're about 1/4 of the way into the tour at this point.....I'm sitting in a Hampton Inn Lobby at 2:20am......
I was planning on knocking out the rest of my taxes tonight, but decided to just do the extension thing.......I'm a procrastinator about certain things---taxes is definitely one of them. I welcome any and all emails from CPAs that want to help a brother out.
So let's see---what's new.......
I taught my iPhone how to play drums on one of my songs, so I've been trying that out at my shows.....adding a little techno element to the AD catalog I guess.....I named my phone Charles Douglas Davis, for the sake of having a name......"Give it up for Charlie!" sounds better than "Give it up for phone!"
Also, I built this awesome box/stand for my keyboard to make it look like an actual upright piano when I play shows. Unfortunately, Dave's band voted it out of our trailer, since it was so large and awkward to pack. So when they swung through nashville last week, they dropped it off. So if you saw it on the road on the first few shows of the tour, please tell everyone else how awesome it was.
This past week was my birthday. Yes, I have a week-long birthday---my mother was in labor for an entire week, so I celebrate all week long.
That's not actually true---however, I did weigh 10lbs10.5ounces when I was born. Yikes. when I bowl I usually use the 10pounder, and I can't imagine having that thing inside me.
Weird. Ok, sorry bout that rant
But.......for my bday I got to fulfill a lifelong dream---I went to the Masters!! It was only for the practice round and part 3 tournament, but still, I got to sit right behind Tiger Woods on the practice range, and got to be a few feet away from Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and Jack Nicklaus as they teed off.....listening over their shoulder as they talked about what they had for dinner last night....about their new grandkids....pretty amazing. I don't really get starstruck with most celebs, but with pro golfers I'm a little bit fluttery inside......
Actually, side note on the Masters.....I played a show in New Orleans on Tuesday night, immediately got into a rental car and drove 10hours through the night to be in Augusta at 8am, ready to walk around the course for 8 hours in the hot sun. Let's just say I slept well that night.
Another side note: when I arrived at Augusta, I had about 30minutes to spare, so I tried to lay back in the driver's seat and take a quick nap. Unfortunately, I kept dreaming that I was falling asleep at the wheel, and would wake up with an intense adrenaline rush grabbing the steering wheel and hitting the brakes. Not a fun feeling.
Well, I'll be checking in more often now---it's good to see a lot of you guys at shows thus far---check the sched and come on out if we're headed near ya---
I'll leave you with a little video from the road. We try to eat really healthy on the road....as much as we can.....but sometimes there are side effects.

back from the dead and the rockboat
Current mood: uuaaaaghhhhhhhh
yall thought i was dead
ok so lots to talk about!!
1. FIRST OF ALL----TODAY "LET THE WOMAN" IS AVAILABLE ON ITUNES!! So yeah. I'm happy about that.
2. ROCKBOAT
the rockboat. yep, it happened. since i can't give every detail, here are a few highlights and setbacks that stuck out to me:
GOOD MEMORIES:
-ice cream cones galore
-waking up at 2pm to eat breakfast, i.e., ice cream cones
-ordering 2 entrees at dinner most nights, plus this "warm chocolate melting cake" thing (so good it makes each of your individual teeth moan and wail for more bites)
-meeting a bunch of new friends, and getting to instantly see people at their craziest....which can be good or bad
-hosting Bingo, with an ice cream cone in my hand
-watching nathan angelo go down the waterslide 7 times in a row, sprinting and cheering between each lap
-on the last morning, watching Miami approach in the distance as the sun came up
BAD MEMORIES:
-seasickness
-on Jamaica day, i forgot to wake up and only had 30 minutes to experience Jamaica, and did so from the back of a cab with a drug-pushing cab driver. in the rain. actually that was kinda fun
-the feeling you get at 4am when you try to eat 3 pieces of pizza from the midnigh |
