Andy Dick is the new Lizard King. It may seem absurd. Andy Dick is to Jim Morrison as Paul Lynde is to the young Marlon Brando, right? Not exactly. Think about it. Morrison was an alcoholic provocateur, prowling the Sunset Strip offending and entertaining in equal measure. He was an intuitive artist known for his indiscriminate sexual adventurism and daring feats of death-defying madness like walking the ledges of tall buildings (and releasing "Touch Me".) The outlandish blonde Andy Dick, whose very name has phallic pagan connotations that Mr. Mojo himself couldn't help but recognize, is like the dark brooding Morrison's negative image. He too prowls the Strip, falling out of moving cars and accosting pretty young things. Of course, Dick's image is outwardly queer while the self-proclaimed Backdoor Man wore his hetero-bravado on his leather sleeve but both could accurately be summed up by the title of Andy Dick and The Bitches of The Century's song, "I'll Fuck Anything That Moves," or as Andy likes to say, "I'm a try-sexual. I'll try anything."
But the similarities don't stop with their shared affinity for sexual indiscretion. Morrison was an aspiring avante garde filmmaker who found international fame fronting a rock band while Dick, who has been performing music since the early 90's (including an appearance at Woodstock 99) is a frustrated rocker poet who gets more attention for playing characters that he refers to as "comic retards" on popular TV shows than for his music. Artists like Dick and Morrison are not blessed with satisfied muses. Hence, they create trouble. Getting kicked out of Barney's Beanery. Shouting the N-word at audiences of mixed race just to see if they can get a rise out of them. They're energy vampires. They feed off chaos and were born to create it. Morrison was a comedian masquerading as a tragic poet. Dick is a tragic poet masquerading as a comedian. And neither Jim nor Andy could or can keep their thing in their pants, onstage or off. Now can you see why we think of Andy Dick as the new Lizard King?
In between his high-profile arrests, rehabs & relapses, Andy has found the time to create "The Darkest Day of The Year" a haunted and paradoxical comic pop record. The title references the fact that Dick was born on the winter solstice. Written & Produced with Andras Jones and pop wizard Willie Wisely, this Dick record promises to be as confrontational and contradictory as the man himself. Heartbreak and bravado mix with nightmare and whimsy to create an event that is unlike any other comedy record, and unlike any other pop record. It's an hallucinogenic rock and roll Cabaret broadside aimed at a decadent culture that doesn't know any better. Is America ready for a new Lizard King? Ready or not, here he comes…right in your ear. |
