The groundbreaking album, Sloe Gin Fizz, comes out on the heels of Skinnytubs’ recent
work on the soundtrack of the critically acclaimed thriller, The Jacket. Music legend
Brain Eno, who composed the soundtrack to the film, was so taken with Tub’s stark,
haunting lament, “Quiet Inside”, that he wove the song through a number of scenes in the
film, including over the end credits.
The George Clooney produced film, much of which is set in a mental institution, stars
Oscar-winner Adrian Brody and Keira Knightley. The Jacket’s award-winning British
director, John Maybury, asked the LA-based singer/songwriter to write a song for the
soundtrack after hearing an early version of Sloe Gin Fizz and Tub’s insights into the
worlds and minds of psychiatric patients, subjects with which Tub’s is all too familiar.
As a former music therapist working in hospitals, institutions and rehab centers, Tub’s
(aka Andy Tubman) used music to communicate with individuals living at the very edges
of the human experience. As a result, the multi-instrumentalist has a unique and
exceptional facility with melody, rhythm and lyric which combine to create music that
can grasp onto a raw nerve, take you to another world and get you to arch your back in
anticipation of ecstasy.
This kind of virtuosity is exposed on Sloe Gin Fizz though fifteen soul-filled tracks, each
one a rare journey into the luscious beauties, outrageous follies and brutal truths that
make up the human condition. From the album’s first, kaleidoscopic, erotic adventure
“High” to the poignant farewell “On and On” that ends the album, no two songs are
exactly the same yet they are united by a depth, resonance and joy that is the product of
the multi-instrumentalist’s unusually intimate relationship with music.
A popular figure on LA’s music scene, Tubs plays the city’s most prestigious musical
venues, including The Knitting Factory and The House of Blues. The Philadelphia native
also recently completed an American tour with his band, The Jane Doe’s, that ended at
the Sundance Film Festival. The band played to a sell-out crowed at The Sundance Music
Café and headlined at a celebrity packed private party where attendees included Ocean’s
11 Director Steven Soderbergh and actors Adrien Brody, Keira Knightley, John C. Reilly
(Chicago), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Anniversary Party) and Kelly Lynch (Drugstore
Cowboy).
Skinnytub’s is now preparing for the Wonderland Records release of Sloe Gin Fizz in
Europe. Plans include a promotional tour on which he will be joined by Jane Doe’s
cohort and percussionist, Brad Colton.
With a voice that displays a rare control, intensity and beauty, the music of Skinnytubs
reveals a masterful writer whose songs are as timeless as they are distinctive.
