| Making their harmonia mundi début, Angela and Jennifer Chun focus on the seldom-heard repertoire for two violins. Accompanied by pianist Nelson Padgett, for this brilliantly performed recital the talented siblings have chosen 20th-century works in the most diverse styles. Opening with the urbane Neo-Classicism of the Czech master Bohuslav Martinu and the sunny Impressionism of Frenchman Darius Milhaud - interspersed with three tuneful dances by Dmitri Shostakovich - the program culminates in the music of the Chuns' native Korea. Presented here in their world-première recording are the unaccompanied Sonatina and Pezzo Fantasioso by Isang Yun (1917-1995), a South Korean composer who spent most of his professional life in Berlin. Improvisatory in feeling yet finely crafted, his two compositions date from the 1980s and share a wide poetic spectrum, full of forceful gestures. Juilliard graduates Angela and Jennifer Chun have garnered international attention for their virtuoso artistry as a concert duo. Following their acclaimed Carnegie Hall début, they have performed at many of the world's finest venues in America, Europe and Asia. |
