| “And let there be justice to our partner Luis Carlos da Vila. It all came up in a meeting at Chico Paulo Freitas´ – in March – when he showed us an album by this “minerinha” (slang for someone born in Minas Gerais). It was during one of many “carioca” (slang meaning from Rio de Janeiro) style lunches, when the music many times does not match the emotions of the mixture of a table of food and a soccer game on the television, when the voice of Angela Evans – (“Evans”) became heard.
Of course on the next day, no record available of what happened and still under the effect of that wonderful shock of kitchen pans, the freshness of that voice remained, above all the pepper and wines that filled our mouths and amplified our senses. Finally awake and curious, all became when Cristovão Bastos told me what happened: Angela Evans recorded everything on one try, live with the musicians, as Elis, Elizeth and Zezé Gonzaga used to.
Its actually nonesense for something to cause me that such enchantment. So much I have done, that, even before the arrival of the copy promised by my partner, an email arrives anouncing “I am Angela Evans” – and the next day I was incredibly surprised with the arrival of the package sent by Sedex 10, I found myself drinking through delicate crystals, the voice of this “mineirinha”.
And what a repertoire!, I would say to myself, listening to these pearls that the producer (who would believe this Jota Souza?) recorded of the singer´s voice. During these hours, I could not isolate myself in all the enchantment, and soon I started making phone calls and sending dozens of emails to friends to spread all my joy.
This Destiny, always conspiring in favor of the blessed, in the same hour, put upon a group of great samba players, lead by Miguel dos Anjos, who invited me to open a musical project at Belo Horizonte some days later. Accepting, I then suggested inviting this lady to stand beside when on stage. And this is how we met.
During lunch, the day after the concert, at Toninho and Meire Costa´s house, Angela shows up with a object-painting – “Atenção!” – by Jota Souza who, as seen, starts infiltrating our story.
I forgot to mention that, through an email sent to me some days before, from the Parque Nacional de Sargamatha, Nepal, he knew quite well, from so far away, my musical career. He would listen to my work in one of those infernally small gadgets during his peregrinations. In conclusion, the painting brought to me by Angela, painted one year before the event, would picture an old man long white hair, dressed in green and pink. We were from many years, constituded in tribe, “súcia”, “malta”. And I did not know – neither did him – the still pilgrim.
Kati Almeida Braga and Olivia Hime, Biscoito Fino, were very objective during our meeting: “If you enjoyed, if Francis (Hime) already knows her, and if Cristovão Bastos can not talk about anything else, we will do it”. “Do it”, meant making the album part of the catalogue – and this decision was made, coincidently, with the return of producer Jota Souza to Brasil to which, to the already recorded eleven sambas, added two – making me join Angela in studio to record one of the new tracks.
I bring to you, as I already apologise to by other beloved female interpreters, Angela Evans. An excellent and visceral singer-interpreter, with a timbre full of strange beauties, and carrier of great personality.
And, I hope, will move all your hearts, like it has done to mine.”
