Another level were signed to the Northwestside label in 1997, they were Dane Bowers, Wayne Williams, Bobak Kianoush and Mark Baron. There first single released “Be alone no more” hit the number six position in 1998 and also had a part from jay z. Jay heard their demo and sent it on to the producers Northwestside.
In July 1998 they hit the number one spot with the cover of Silk’s hit “Freak Me.” In November 1998 they released the top five hit “Guess I was a fool” and by the end of the year they had released the most singles in the UK than any other artist.
Their album “Another Level” was also released in November of 1998, with collaborations from artists such as Ghostface Killah from the Wu Tang Clan. The lads were fighting for the number one spot against pop trio 911 for the number one spot sadly Another Level only got to number two with the hit of “I want you for myself released in January 1999.
In June 1999 Another Level decided that they wanted to try and see if Simon Fuller (who managed S Club 7) would be able to give them the same success that he had given other bands.
In the summer of 1999 they released the top 10 hit “From the heart” from the hugely popular “Notting Hill.” Another Level beat the top selling star Ronan Keating from Boyzone from being the first artist to release their single from the Notting Hill Soundtrack.
“Nexus” was Another Level’s next album to be released in November 1999 with such singles as “Bomb Diggy” and “Summertime.” “Summertime” was to be the single that would break America for the four lads where Another Level collaborated with US rapper TQ.
Shortly after “Bomb Diggy” in November 1999 Wayne Williams decided to leave the band to pursue his solo career. The band decided they were going to carry on as a threesome and said that for forthcoming appearances “It's gonna be different, it's gonna change. But I think we're strong enough at the end to carry on and get through that."
In December 1999 Bobak also decided to leave the band this meant that both Wayne and Bobak’s vocals had to be taken off of their new single, which was due to be released in the later part of that year. Mark and Dane both decided that they were going to rest for a year and then audition a new member for the group. Dane said in an interview in 1999 "To be honest, I think we're probably gonna look for someone else. Maybe for a single we'll try two of us and have like maybe a guest vocalist or something. We're not doing anything this year - we're gonna wait 'til next year. Probably audition another guy in and go on with the three of us. We don't wanna just audition someone for the sake of having another member, y'know, vocally we've always a very strong group and we want, obviously, the best. So it's gonna be difficult to find someone we think that's gonna fit. We wanna have a great vocalist, basically.”
