| After their former band distinguished, Jaydn and Cole decided their new project needed a new direction. Replacing the distortion driven songs of their past was music more gentle, intricate. They soon realized a male’s voice would not suit this new sound and so began looking for a female. After months of awful auditions, Natalie Portlock, a singer gigging with a jazz group in Sacramento, met and played with Jaydn’s father who then referred Natalie to his son’s new project. The three were equally amazed by each other’s talents and so began Apt 12.
Jaydn, Cole, and Natalie began writing songs in the summer of 2004. Not having the luxury of a decent rehearsal spot, the three took to practicing in Natalie’s studio apartment. The small space afforded them a musical intimacy not allowed by a large room and loud drums. They found this environment suited their needs just fine and the band still rehearses there daily. Apt 12 is still drummerless, too, though they have not let that stop them from recording, promoting, or performing. If a tasteful and committed drummer cannot be found, they plan to hire a session drummer for their professional album.
