| When I started to record the album Qualquer, in 2006, my intentions were to record it live, as a DVD. Not being able to fulfill my desire, the CD was recorded, in studio, but mostly live, with all musicians playing together, at the same time. Qualquer was released September, last year, and in October we were already on tour. The presentations were adaptations of the album (recorded on string based instruments and a piano) to a trio setup, composed by Chico Salem (who also participated on the recording sessions), on the acoustic and nylon strings guitars; Betão Aguiar, on the electric and nylon guitar; and Marcelo Geneci, on the keyboards and accordion. With some new tunings and beats, we were able to create the album´s atmosphere. Maybe, the most remarkable feature of the performances was the piano being substituted by accordions and keyboards. With the sounds making more sense as the time passed and a dialog between instruments being created to sound more and more like a band, the idea of creating a DVD became even stronger. Besides the tracks from Qualquer, new arrangements were created to old songs, bringing them to a more intimate level, with no piano and percussion. The tones of some songs were even changed to fit the environment and the naturally deeper sound of my voice. The track list enjoyed songs like Silêncio, Saiba, Pedido de Casamento, Judiaria, Socorro, Se Tudo Pode Acontecer, Fim do Dia, within others (from the albums Ninguém, O Silêncio, Um Som, Paradeiro e Saiba), including new versions of Não Vou Me Adaptar and O Pulso, songs from my Titãs era. Also versions of Bandeira Branca (Max Nunes and Laércio Alves), recorded for the soundtrack of Gêmeas, as a request by the director, Andrucha Waddington, in 1999 (present with a poetic mix on Buraco no Espelho), also the previously unreleased on the record, Caetano Veloso´s, Qualquer Coisa. The last one was motivated by its name coinciding with the tour name, Qualquer (also the CD´s name), which also contains, besides the title track, a track called Coisas (a partnership with Gil, recorded with Caetano in Tropicalia 2 and interpreted once again, in Qualquer), besides Socorro (partnership with Alice Ruiz), its choir being, “Qualquer coisa que se sinta…” (translation: anything felt…). It was like Caetano´s Qualquer Coisa was already flying above us, I Just needed to approve its landing. The new arrangement also excited me to perform live.
I felt so much pleasure in performing as in this tour. A more intimate, thus relaxed, atmosphere really fit the way I wanted my work to sound, relishing everything sound and syllable. The result: more clarity in each song, opening a path for a better understanding of the lyrics, without losing my own attitude, already unique, on stage (my heritage from rock ´n roll). The opportunity of recording the DVD, only came a year after touring Qualquer. It was the perfect timing, for we were able to develop the new arrangements, experiments and changes in the track listing, perfecting the “machine”. But my intentions were not to only register the tour. This was my chance to create an innovation in terms of video language. Thus, we thought of returning to the studio (and record all instruments at the same time), like the first time, but now with a live audience (where we would have we would have the best recording conditions).
Mosh entered the partnership, offering his studio A for our recording session, and all its structure (mixing, editing, masters, and authorization). Before an audience of fifty people seated on the floor, we were able to record. The studio mixing room separated by a glass from where we were also became part of the scene. The concert already had a video in black and white, created by Marcos Xavier and Doca Corbett, working as a moving stage, and wardrobe, created by Marcelo Sommer, were all in different shades of gray. Since we were already fond of this environment, very suitable to the project, we decided to go with DVD in black and white.
To direct, I called Tadeu Jungle, who was also the director of two video clips of mine (Poder and O Silêncio) and who I already wished to work on a more intense video project. I suggested working with various concepts of light and contrasts, trying to get as far away from television shows and closer to cinema and German expressionism from the beginning of the last century. To ccreate the possible results we intended to, we invited Marieta Feber, who was responsible for a perfect work.
This being my first live DVD (and CD), I really wanted it to be a photograph of my career, in a greater perspective. I amplified the set list so that it would demonstrate myself the best (including na exclusive, Quarto de Dormir, a partnership with Marcelo Jeneci).
I also invited as special guests, some of the artists who contributed in my 25 year long career. With Nando Reis, sang Não Vou Me Adaptar, recorded with Titãs (recorded on the album Televisão and, later, on Go Back, live in Montreux) and later he included in his own solo repertoire. With Edgar Scandurra we performed Judiaria (by Lupicínnio Rodrigues, which we recorded together in the album Ninguém), almost all of them a combination of voice and guitar. Also, from a partnership done in the 80´s, Eu Não Sou da Sua Rua, with Branco Mello, also recorded by Marisa Monte, back in ´91, and recorded once again by myself.
My Titãs era is clearly noticed with the presence of Branco and Nando. Edgard, a real partner, participated in all my albums during my solo career. Tribalistas, was my only era missing. Carlinhos and Marisa also answered my call, and also Dadi, who recorded with us, so that we could complete two songs of that repertoire – Um a Um and Velha Infância. And there is the result: Ao Vivo no Estúdio.
I just hope, as you listen, you have as much fun as we had recording it.
