Monday, November 20th, 2006 'Tis The Season To Turn On Promotional Efforts THOUGHT OF THE DAY... Progress doesn't always seem like progress. Sometimes you feel like you're going in circles... probably because you are. But don't worry about it - you'll eventually work yourself to the center where you can watch everyone else running around in circles.
As the holiday season approaches, many of us are tempted to put our promotional efforts on hold until the New Year. With most of us taking vacations and turning our attention to holiday activities, it seems like a bad time for performers to be trying to get any meaningful results from their promotion and marketing plans.
But the holiday season is in fact a great time for promotional purposes... if for no other reason than knowing the competition is taking a break and leaving the field wide open for the rest of us. Demands for the future don't slow down that much over the holiday season and everyone that's looking for talent is still looking for good acts regardless of the date. This makes it a great time to be the person "right there" to solve a last minute problem and/or be the first in line for possible availabilities down the road.
Of course, the hospitality sector, likely needs even more people to handle the holiday rush... so, it is a prime time to possibly pick up on some work due to cancellations and/or add-on opportunities due to a shortage of good talent at this time of year. Whatever the case, it can introduce you to a whole new group of agents, producers and talent buyers.
In the corporate sector, promotion departments have end-of-the-year budgets to spend, or projects that need to be finished before December 31, and sometimes they find themselves scrambling for the right people at what is traditionally an awkward time of year. In other cases they're gearing up for projects starting in January or February and still have to find a few missing pieces to complete their entertainment line-up.
For those companies experiencing holiday season slow-downs, it can be a good time for them to start working on projects that they've previously shuffled to the side of their desks. Your promotional package could arrive at just the right time.
It really is a myth that November and December are bad months for promotions. It's easy for us to get caught up in the flurry of extra Christmas work and activity and forget about any promotional chores. It's true that many of us are not interested in doing much work over the holidays and, thus, we think that our marketing efforts will be wasted. But, many of the new, hungry members of our industry will be working through the holidays and it is this, "get the jump on your competitor" contingent of our business that is most likely to pay attention to something new and different.
Create a unique Christmas promotion hook and take advantage of an opportunistic situation!

impulsive_lust's comment posted November 21st @ 11:14 AM: Thank you Les, for the inspiring advice which is really so true.
For those artists who are usually alone throughout the "holidy" season, this is really great motiviation to believe that this time does not have to be wasted, waiting for everyone else to get done having a great time before we can move on with our lives.
Cheers and much love,
