| North Carolina natives Asfyxia bridge the gap between Punk and Alternative Metal. While songs like All That I've Been Waiting For might remind listeners of Christian punkers Hawk Nelson or Relient K others such as Asphyxiate resonate from a darker level (think A Perfect Circle or Nine Inch Nails). Most of the songs fit somewhere in between. Many of Asfyxia's songs are carried by ambient like guitar arpegios and etherial melodies which fade into driving rythms and heavier breakdowns.
In March of 2004 Ben Hemingway formed Asfyxia with a few friends from Youth Group. The band originally consisted of Josh Abraham as lead singer, Hemingway on lead guitar, Robert Woodcock on bass, and Chuck Russell on drums. Chuck and Ben reccorded the band's first demo, All That I've Been Waiting For, in April. Later that month Graham Langdon, who had been in Scoop and the Flaming Longjohns with Ben, joined the band as a second guitarist. Josh and Robert left the band soon after, but on good terms with the rest of the guys. Graham then took over as lead singer, and the band recruited Derek Coins to play bass. A month later Graham left the band over artistic differences between his folk inspired rock style and the band's current pop punk sound. The same week the band dropped Chuck as drummer for never showing up to practices. Faced with rebuilding the band Ben and Derek turned to Matt Shaftner to play drums, but Matt only stayed on board for a month. Finally in July of 2004 Ben hooked up with long time friend Daniel Fitzgerald at a watergun war. After hearing Daniel playing the drums the band recruited him immediately. Ben took over lead vocals and the band lineup was finally complete. |
