"Askew" was born Matt Dyer on August 14, 1991 and raised by a single mother in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. At age 11, Matt was broached to rap music by his step-brothers with Afroman's 'High Times' and Eminem's 'Marshall Mathers LP'. He fell in love. Askew originally started writing rhymes under the name "Brutal" in 2004, at age 13. Three years later he began recording his music under the name "Odes" and ultimately changed his name to what it is now.
"People expect something different from a white, suburban hip-hop artist. I think the whole 'suburban' aspect makes me different as an artist because I'm not expected to 'rap' a certain way," Askew construes. "I believe that I'm a little more introspective and cynical than other artists. I've done nothing noteworthy with my life, but when it comes to my music, I think it deserves some sort of attention." Askew doesn't stick to any particular formula when songwriting. His music has more of a hip-hop feel to it compared to other contemporary acts, and life is his number one influence for his craft. "Without it, it would just be mundane subjects irrelevant to myself over an instrumental." Other influences include Eminem, Jedi Mind Tricks, Immortal Technique, Papoose, The Game, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Twista, Ludacris, Black Star...the list goes on and on.
Askew has only done one show so far in his career. It was a large showcase of local talent held in August 2008 in which he was the first act. Askew has worked with a few artists so far in his foray into hip-hop. Malignant Aura, from Washington, is both his idol and co-conspirator. Askew has also worked with producers Vise Versa, Controversial Productions, and 3rd Level.
Askew has recently released 'The Prelude EP', a little teaser before his album drops. He is currently in the process of gathering material for his two mixtapes 'Brick & Mortar Vol. 1 - Destroy' and 'The Daily Grind Vol. 1 - Tabloid Journalism'. He is also working on, 'The Prelude', his debut album. In the future he plans on releasing his second album, 'Expose' in 2011. "I have a general outline of albums and mixtapes all the way up until 2034 if I dropped something every six months and an album every 2 or 3 years. Yeah, I'll be around 41 before my final album releases if I stick to that."
"If someone can't identify with one thing in any of my songs, I'm a failure all around." |
