Greatest voice in rock? No doubt Cornell has got an awesome voice. Personally, I think it may be the best in rock; but not necesarily. What do you think? Who has a better voice than Chris?

Personaly, i think Maynard James Keenan has the best voice, chino moreno is good too, My Favorite is Serj Tankian, but Maynard is amazeing | Mr_Krift |
You ask who has a better voice than Chris? Nobody.
Chris is amazing.
I get goosesbumps anytime I hear him.
He's been good at what he does since the DAY Soundgarden started, and probably when he was in his little high school band, the Jones Street Band...
He will be good at what he does 'till the day he dies (hopefully that wont be anytime soon) | rancidropkick12cents |
Nobody sounds like Chris. But, his vocals sound better in Soundgarden. But, it still sounds great now. But, i bet there are gonna be some people who are gonna copy his style. | riff_master |
His voice was better is sg. Its alot scratchier now, but its still great and fits morello's guitaring amazingly. | big-k |
Yeah chris' voice is amazing. It kinda reminds me of an angst-ridden robert plant. Some other great voices would have to be layne staley and maynard from tool. | zero18 |
it reaminds me of plant somewhat too because of all the energy he puts into singing but plant was def better without a doubt | konkomania |
yeah. plant was better. but chris has a nice voice too. | zeppelinfan89 |
If Layne Staley was alive, he could give Cornell a run for his money.

They are equals. Different styles, but equals. | big-k |
| I love cornell.. but layne kills him | hells_angel |
Actually, you may be right, for cornells early days at least. Back during Screaming Life/Fopp, Ultramega OK, Louder Than Love, and Badmotorfinger days, he mostly screamed. During Temple Of The Dog he sometimes screamed, and sometimes used his 'serene voice'. Sort've a counter to his trademark screaming vocals(which are great by the way) so that the ears can calm down a bit. He used the serene voice on most of the tracks on Audioslave(except Cochise, Show Me How to Live, and some others). Superunknown and DOTU were mostly serene too as I remember. I think most of the competition is laynes mellow voice(nutshell, down in a hole, God Am, etc.) and cornells serene voice(Like A Stone, 4th of July, Call Me A Dog, Black Hole Sun, Getaway Car, etc.). | big-k |
I don't think mellow describes layne's voice, I think "mysteriously creaky" fits better. Layne's voice seems to have more texture than Cornell's. Cornell's voice sounds flatter than layne's, and layne's voice is naturally sharper than his too, cornell's voice only sounds sharp when he does his little scream thing like in cochise and show me how to live but with the "serene" voice in like a stone and i am the highway his serene voice is flatter than layne's. I also think Layne's voice rages with all sorts of mixed emotions on almost everysong, which makes him more powerful. Cornell does some, but not as much as layne did. Cornell problaby has one of the best if not the best voice in present day rock...a million times better than these cheap immitators of today. | hells_angel |
The last of a dying breed is how i've seen him described. Its true, notice that he's the only one of his genre left who really is getting recognition. Mark Lanegan is still recording, but he never really was anything big in the first place. Eddie Vedder lost his fame years ago. Layne and Kurt both kicked it. Mark Arm is still going with Mudhoney(last album was in 2001 I believe, but same thing as Lanegan. Scott Weiland and the others that came after are mostly faded away(except weiland of course), and dont count in that breed anyway. I'm surprised he's been able to stay so popular.
I still say they're equal. If cornell is flat, layne is almost as, if not as equally, flat.

I didn't mean he was flat in any bad way, I'm comparing the vocal styles, I mean literally the tone of his voice sounds like a flat music note on a guitar or something, layne's voice is not flat at all. But I understand what you're saying how they are equally as good and they are, but I just prefer Layne, to me his voice stands out more, not that Cornell's doesnt.

sorry im kinda late in commenting..heh. chris cornell has an amazing fuckin voice, i think the only other guy that can compete with him would be eddie vedder of pearl jam. | rockmehard |
sorry buddy .. the only one who could've competed with cornell is Layne fucken Staley. Cornell kills eddie vedder. there is no competition there. | hells_angel |
Vedder just tries too hard. Jeremy is a great song, and they make some good music, but he wasnt among the best of the grunge singers. Top 3 singers of the era had to be Cornell, Staley, and Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees. Listen to Mad Season's song Long Gone Day(featuring Layne and Lanegan both on vocals), and tell me that vedder even comes CLOSE. And close 4th would have been Andrew Wood, but only in Mother Love Bone(I recently bought Return To Olympus by Malfunkshun, terrible I have to say). The great thing about Chris was not only his ability in vocalism, but also his superb lyrics.
To compare cornell and vedder, listen to the Temple Of The Dog album, specifically Hunger Strike. | big-k |
hes got a great voice but ozzy osbourne has the best voice in rock n roll. some other great voices are david lee roth, dee snider, axl rose, bon scott, bruce dickenson, robert plant, and alice cooper. those are some more top vocalists, but ozzy devinatley has the best voice. | crazyGNRfan |
Oh, man a stupid question to be asked ofcourse nobody gets close to the voice of Chris. Men his totally amazing nobody else. But I think Myles Kennedy is following him.... | hoax |
well i guess you guys have never heard of layne staley( Alice in chains vocalist) then.. his voice range was amazing- listen to Love, Hate, Love, Man in the Box, or Nutshell which are some of his vocal masterpieces if you don't believe me.although the different styles, cornell and staley are equally as good . I maintain that staley is the only cornell contemporary that was his equal if not better. | hells_angel |
CrazyGNRFan, I notice that most of them were either hair metal or other 80's vocalists. Yes ozzy was a great singer, but he really was nowhere close to the others in my opinion. He had an amazing range, but was sometimes too high pitched, and he also did the whole hair metal thing in the eighties, which turns me off him. Bon Scott was good at making rough, raw, dirty rock music, but it was nothing pretty, so I can't call him a great vocalist. Axl Rose had great range, but his lyrics were mostly crap. Dee Snider and Alice Cooper? Nah. Bruce Dickenson I can agree with. Robert Plant I disagree with too. He was quite good, and definatly fit the music, but his voice wasn't that amazing to me. Just because the band is considered to be great, doesnt mean the singer was. Thats what MTV and VH1 need to learn.
Another, but much less known, vocalist I think can compete with Cornell is Damon Johnson of Brother Cane. Just listening to Seeds, I am amazed with him. | big-k |
| bruce dickinson is awesome | Hells_Angel |
I'm biased cuz Alice In Chains is my favorite band. As amazing as Layne Staley was and as awesome as Chris Cornell still is, I couldn't picture either singing with the other's group (a notable exception being AIC's Sap EP with Alice Mudgarden's song). All I know is, for me, they demolish any other modern rock singer I can think of other than Maynard James Keenan. | NoiseOrdinance |
I take that back. 2 other singers on the same level (in my opinion) are Burton C. Bell from Fear Factory and Greg Gaffin from Bad Religion. The other thing all these great vocalists seem to have in common is that they are all amazing lyricists, too | NoiseOrdinance |
personally i like Layne Staley better, but Cornell is great too. | bloodfire_sangrereis |
cornell has an amazing voice, it's up there with the best of them, perfect for rock and also very original, no one else sounds like him.
Personally, I can only think of a one who is better, and one is the lead singer of shinedown, that guy seriously gives me goosebumps. | gotahemmi |
yeah, brent smith of shinedown is awesome! i like him..hes cool | bloodfire_sangrereis |
Yeah its One of the Best But Anothny from Rhcp and Maybe Axl Rose have Better | moose17 |
Cornell is better then Axl Rose and Anthony Kiedis. | hardrocker23 |
singer from trivium's voice is ace, best at the moment, sej from soad, alter bridge's singer fuckin rules n all! | fatally_yours |
| No your wrong. Fall in a hole and die. | hardrocker23 |
The singer for Alterbridge sucks. Serj is good. I'd put him up there. | BLASTT |
heafy from trivium has an amazing voice. but hes not one of the best | Letstartawar |
axl rose sucks , hes not worthy of being compared to cornell or staley
