“Lost Men and Angry Girls” chronicles the past three years Audrey Auld Mezera has spent living on the coast of Northern California. Musically and personally it’s been an eventful period for the MerleFest/Chris Austin Song Contest winner and two-time ARIA nominee. Mezera’s writing explores the mysteries of Love, Hate, Life, Death, Money and Music.
She calls it 'Ameri-kinda' music - traditional American music influences with Australian roots.
Mezera’s writing has evolved to be less about the state of her heart and more about the path we all share as human beings in this time of great political upheaval and global imbalance. But there’s no finger-pointing in these songs of small towns, self-help, lives gone awry, death of heroes, lost men and angry girls. Mezera travels her path with humor, insight, pathos and compassion.
“America is such a political entity in the world, and I'm living in Hippy Central, Ca. but it's still the Wild West“, says Audrey, “The San Andreas Fault line runs through our lounge room, restraining orders are fashion accessories, the cops wear bullet-proof vests, the wealthy look 'Homeless' and you can give and get whatever you want from The Freebox. There's got to be a song in that!"
“the songs here consolidate Mezera’s enormous writing talent” ~ K Porter, Forte Magazine, Vic
Recorded primarily in Australia, this is the first album from Audrey where she has handed over the production reins to her trusted collaborator, Bill Chambers, who retains the sparse arrangements that characterize Mezera’s work.
“It’s always exciting to work on music with Audrey. These songs reflect her life, where she now lives and the places and people she comes in contact with. I’ve always been proud to be part of Audrey’s recordings, but even more so with this one.” ~ Bill Chambers
The move to America has been good for Mezera. After winning the prestigious Chris Austin Song Contest (“Losing Faith”) this year, she was also a finalist (from 900 entries) in the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival songwriting contest (“Last Seen in Gainesville”).
The Californian music community has embraced Mezera as one of their own and she’s been nominated in several regional music awards.
“Do believe the hype” M Kramer, Pacific Sun, Ca.
“Australia’s loss has been America’s gain” S Libowitz, Montecito Journal, Ca.
“She writes and sings songs with a worldly truth... She not only sounds like she grew up on Music Row in Nashville, but she writes the kinds of songs that built Music Row in the first place.”
~ G Meline, North Bay Bohemian, Ca.
After marrying and relocating to California in '03 it was only a matter of time before Mezera crossed paths with one of the greatest accompanists in the world, Nina Gerber. The magic created by the two was evident from the start and after hearing the recording of their second show together they realized they had something special. ‘In The House’ (2006) a live double CD was the result.
“’In The House’ is a document of pure fluidity. Second to Mezera’s songwriting is her expressionistic phrasing, something that Lucinda Williams and Patty Griffin share. When this delicacy is augmented by Gerber’s sprawling atmosphere of arpeggios, absolute chemistry is at play.”
