"Someone once said to me, I dont understand the words, but I kind of imagine and rebuild some kind of universe, some kind of atmosphere to the music," explains Autour de Lucies guitarist, Jean-Pierre Ensuque. Now, on the verge of releasing their latest album, Faux Mouvement in North America, the band is once again prepared to bridge the language barrier offered by their brand of dreamy French pop. Valirie Leulliot, front woman and lyricist for the evocative trio adds, "The French language is more precise. You have one word for every meaning, every nuance."
Three years bridge the release of Autour de Lucies 'Immobile' and the Parisian bands newest offering, 'Faux Mouvement'. That could be considered a long time, but Autour de Lucie spent the time wisely. Valirie shared a microphone with Swedish crooner Jay Jay Johanson; bassist/arranger Fabrice Dumont manipulated samples for Telipopmusik and wrote string arrangements for other French artists (Anna Karina, Katerine and Zizi Mago); and guitarist Jean-Pierre Ensuque collaborated with the Ben Symphonic Orchestra. All of that as well as a slew of live Autour De Lucie shows all over Europe and North America supporting 'Immobile'.
After these various escapades the little family was expanded with a new drummer, Sibastien Buffet, and they shut themselves up in the studio to make Faux Mouvement. The group decided to reinvent its recording methods and break down the idea of roles. That way, each person could add their own two cents wherever they wanted. The demos were so astounding that Ian Caple, who was hired to mix these initial sessions, demanded to produce and record the album. Only the producer of such noteworthy acts as Tindersticks, Tricky and even Stina Nordenstam, could give a three dimensional feel to the combination of classic instruments and machines, to Autours cinematic atmosphere, where electronic and acoustic sounds meet.
The unbridled result poses certain problems for those who prefer to stick to mainstream definitions: 'Faux Mouvement' is exempt from classification. Its charm resides precisely in the intermingling of genres where cold programmed machines and unnerving guitars are wrapped by superb string arrangements. Instruments like the piano, flute, harp and vibraphone find a natural place in these new purified, layered compositions.
While the lyrics speak of a certain perception of space, suggested by the body (Je Suis Un Balancier, Corps itrangers), or of everyday life (Vide, Lent, Le Salon ), there is also a micro-photographic approach to existence and feelings. Throughout these introspective themes, some give a touch of surrealism (Chanson De LArbre) while others, like "Sans Commentaire" with its mechanical count, are not without comparisons to the scientific classifications of a certain G. Perec.
If some people are born already old, and others mature while teenagers, Autour de Lucie is taking its time to mature, never failing to surprise or to constantly raise the bar higher. |
