The quasi-punk rasta/reggae band Bad Brains started out in 1979, then releasing their self-titled album in 1982. Another year later, the group released the album Rock for Light, and three years later coming out with I Against I. In 1993, Epic records signed Bad Brains, but considering that their album flopped horribly, the contract was "dropped". Then, Mavrick Records signed the band, only if the original band members were included, and then released God of Love in 1995. After God of Love came out, the two lead members Earl and Paul Hudson left the band, and three years later reunited under the name of Soul Brains.
THE MEMBERS:
Paul Hudson: a.k.a H.R.(which may or may not stand for hunting rod, a childhood nickname), lead vocals, influenced by the Clash
Earl Hudson: brother of H.R., played the drums
Darryl Aaron Jennifer: played bass
Gary Miller: a.k.a. Dr. Know, played the guitar, started the band, influenced by jazz.
The band started out as a jazz funk band, but when H.R. heard the Sex Pistols, the band decided to be a punk band, and then, after the release of Police and Thieves buy the Clash(!), wanted a reggae sound as well. Being that they were the only black punk band(and still are one of the few), word of the band spread quickly. The band was well known for their live performances starting in their basement in Maryland, but few successful albums were made by the quartet. Eventually, the band members broke off and started bands of their own.
THE INFLUENCES:
-The Sex Pistols
-The Clash
-Bob Marley
-Beastie Boys
-jazz musicians
-other small punk groups
Their most successful album was their debut, "Pay to Cum".
