Are you waiting for an artist who stands out and stands up for his identity? Are you longing for an artist who blends provocative lyrics with a deep message and plastic disco music? Then your wait is over!
Bimbo Boy's real name is Dennis Svedberg Hellström and he grew up in the small town of Sandviken in the middle of Sweden. He was born in 1984 and since he was a little kid he's been interested in music and movies. Bimbo Boy comes from a musically talented family and has been singing since he was very young. When he's not writing lyrics or listening to 80's pop music, he's dreaming away in front of classic Hollywood movies with his big idol Marilyn Monroe or goes shopping with his friends.
In June 2002 Bimbo Boy's big dream came true. That's when he got to record his first songs "You (Are My Life)" and "I Won't Do It For Free". The songs, which he wrote the lyrics to himself, were released on the Internet and got a lot of attention. Soon after that lots of producers contacted Bimbo Boy and wanted to work with him.
The summer of 2005 gave Bimbo Boy his first single "Je Suis Une Superstar" and, soon after, he started working with songwriter Anders Dannvik. They wrote the song "Drama Queen" together and it was submitted to Melodifestivalen, the Swedish pre-selection to the Eurovision Song Contest. The song didn't make it to the semi-finals but made it into the top 100 of the 3200 songs submitted. "Drama Queen" was released as a single and climbed to number three on the singles chart of CDON, the online music store. The video for the song was filmed in the USA and in Sweden. Bimbo Boy travelled to the USA and sang at the premier screening of the video in front of 600 people. The next day he returned to Sweden and held a release party for the single in Stockholm.
Bimbo Boy has been especially noticed in the gay community. Because Bimbo Boy is gay himself he began to launch his music there. He also knew that disco music is very popular in gay culture. Bimbo Boy wants to help the gay community and, through his music, reduce hate. He wants to be accepted for who he is, regardless of his stereotypical image - being a "queen" is not a bad thing! Bimbo Boy says:
"I am myself, and have always been. It's not like I woke up one day, realised I was gay and thought that I must start listening to disco and liking pink things. I don't think I should change because of people's prejudices. To change society we must dare to be ourselves."
Many people wonder why he chose Bimbo Boy as a stage name. Bimbo Boy says: "Since I was little I've looked up to female artists who use sex in their image and music. Some examples are Kylie Minogue, Marilyn Monroe and Samantha Fox. They have often been called bimbos by the media and have not taken seriously because of their image, which I think is wrong. So that's why I decided to call myself Bimbo Boy to get some kind of discussion started. Besides, it's not usual for a guy to call himself a bimbo since it's only associated with women. Bimbo Boy is a provocative stage name that stands out, and I like that!"
Bimbo Boy calls his music "plastic pop". He's hugely influenced by 80's disco music and, even though his songs can seem superficial, they have a message. Bimbo Boy says:
"Many of my songs are about homosexual love, which I think ought to be represented more in the media. But my songs still apply to all types of people. I would like to think that my music would help some people think before they judge. To influence others, one must sometimes be provocative, which is not always accepted. But my life is a movie and I hope I can direct it the right way." |
