“If Ned Kelly was a woman, with a penchant for vicious amphetamines,
and her gang used honey mandolins to flail the wicked:they would sound like this.”
Rising like banshees, out of the mist shrouded Victorian mountaintops of
Melbourne’s darker woods - guitar, double bass and a voice soaring between
intense syrupy lilts and raucous growling:they are The Bitter Sweets.
A wild garden of influences: earthy Americana, a spice of blues, a diamante
of rockabilly, many a train song, love lost and longing. Their pearl-inlaid
tales are set out in an ocean of honeysuckle guitars, having stewed in a
history of 60’s garage rock, they are charcoal filtered to deliver a fine
liqueur of rollicking bitter sweet roots gold.
Spanning the breadth of bluegrass, country, folk and blues but delivering
something altogether new, with a depth of understanding that belies all of
these genres.
Reaping a bountiful harvest of supports with the likes of Jen Cloher, The
Handsome Family, Mia Dyson & Sara Lee Guthrie and Summer residencies at The
Wesley Anne & The Edinburgh Castle. Their cult following is garnered from
the emotional intensity of their fiery live sets, the finely crafted finger
picking, and the raw untamed impact of Jen's vocal watershed.
