| Based in Southern Florida, Black Zodiac is a heavy metal band fromed in early 2002 by Cuban-born beauty, Mayelin. The band, which is signed to the Chicago-based record label Sonic wave International, released their debut album "Psychotic Hatred," in May 2004. Most recently, Black Zodiac inked a deal for artist representation with a New York City-based entertainment agency.
Mayelin was born and raised in Santa Clara, Cuba. She grew up on the music of Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Guns & Roses, Aerosmith, and other 80s rockers. Her favorite performer was Ozzy. She was able to identify and connect with his dark, deep-rooted, reflective personatlity, spirit and music. She felt submerged in the dark music of heavy metal. Mayelin believed that music would be her way of releasing her tribulations growing up in a house full of biolence and violence. She feels reborn to share with others the pain that she carried through her childhood and adolescence.
Mayelin and her family emigrated to the United States in 1994 and settled in Miami, Florida. Over the next few years, she continued with her public school education, and alos took action and modeling classes, and appeared in a number of local and regional projects. It was during this time that Mayelin also concentrated heavily on perfecting her songwriting skills. She was able to articulate in words and music her sullen inner-self in a impassioned pathos-filled style.
By the end of 2001, Mayelin decieded to form a band which she named Black Zodiac. To Mayelin, the name Black Zodiac "represents all the different personalities of the zodiac, with the darkness behind them." By chance, she met Aaron Robinson, a bassist/guitarist who played for several heavy metal bands, most notably, Genocide. Mayelin informed Aaron of her ambitions, and before long he agreed to collaborate with her on the Black Zodiac project. By March 2003 they had a self-financed four song LP, "Love In Darkness," which was released commercially. A local talent agency pitch the LP to record labels. Black Zodiac drew attention from several record labels who were interested in signing the band to multi-album deals.
In Feburary 2004, Black Zodiac signed a deal with Sonic Wave International. They hooked up with producer Juan "Punchy" Gonzalez (Morbid Angel's co-producer) and recored Mayelin's songs for Black Zodiac's debut album "Psychotic Hatred". The eleven-track album was released on May 18,2004 and dwas distributed worldwide. The CD was serviced to radio stations throughout the US, and it received airplay on more than 250 commercial and non-commercial stations. Accompanying the release of the album was a video for the tune, "Love In Darkness," which was solictied to variour video outlets throughout the country.
Following the successful release of "Psychotic Hatred," Black Zodiac began prepartations to tour. However, difficulties finding a suitable drummer resulted in a delay of the tour. By the end of 2004, they had found a drummer, Jay Browning, who has now becone a integral part of the band along with Mayelin and Aaron. In early 2005, Black Zodiac signed a contract for artist representation with DasBro Enterprise, a full service entertainment agency based in New York City.
Black Zodiac approaches their art differently than most of their contemporaries. They focus on the "whole picture," taking into consideration image, music, lyrical content, and performance, all arranged to fit togther in perfect harmony. They look to be above the standards in metal today by keeping the lyrics clean and enlightening. They also extract musical influences from outside of the metal genre while still being true to the roots of the style with Mayelin's vocal power in combination with their unrestricted musical vision, there will be no end to Black Zodiac |
