GOVERNMENT HAS CONTEST TO FIND NEW NAME FOR U.S.A.
GOVERNMENT HAS CONTEST TO FIND NEW NAME FOR U.S.A.
Monday April 17, 2006

By MARK MILLER

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The former Siam changed its name to Thailand. Persia changed its name to Iran. Ceylon changed its name to Sri Lanka. And now, the United States is looking to upgrade its image in the world by changing its name, too.

"Changing the name of a country is a big step," explains Dwight Putnam, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State. "After all, the name of a country is integral to its national pride and patriotism. But this happens more often than you might think. And we feel the time is perfect for a sparkling new name for America."

The government's Name the U.S.A. Contest has just begun and will continue until the first of the New Year. "The winner will receive a $100,000 cash prize, so we encourage everyone to submit a name." Some of the names submitted so far include: Freedomland, RedWhiteBluesylvania, LoveItorLeaveItville and Democracyfornia.

Not everyone in Washington, however, is a fan of the proposed name change. A White House insider argues, "The United States of America is more than 225 years old. Our name is our brand and it's working. If it's not broke, why fix it? You don't see anyone rushing to change Coke, Xerox, Ford or Spain!" Sources close to the president say he's in favor of the idea and is partial to Dubyamerica.
