Thursday, July 13th, 2006 Controversy over tribute bands What do you think of tribute bands? Are they great tribute's to the musicians we've come to love, or do they disrespect them by doing covers of their original music after
their death? I think this is an interesting discussion topic; there's a fair amount of controversy over this already- what's your opinion?
I'm not really sure what to think of these 'tribute' bands, as they call themselves. For example, I really respect Badfish (a tribute to Sublime), for honoring the memory of Brad Nowell and the band's amazing music. On the other hand, I know that there will never again be anyone like Brad, any band like Sublime, and it almost seems that to be covering their original music would be somewhat blasphemous (or maybe that's just me
being highly moralistic...right). I mean, if you were Brad would you want someone to be performing the music that you wrote, after your death? However, Brad might think of it to
be cool that someone is honoring him and his music and that he is being remembered. We'll never know.
Some band's that haven't even broken up have tribute's too, one being Gwen in Doubt, No Doubt's tribute. In my opinion, No Doubt is one of the greatest bands (or at least ska
bands) ever, and no one on earth has a voice like Gwen Stefani (that's not just my opinion, it's a well known fact. Same goes for Mr. Nowell). Personally, I don't think anyone could
do a good cover of them. Then again, I still manage respect towards them for honoring a great band like No Doubt. The thing is- are they really honoring them, or just making money off of someone elses music, while using the word 'tribute' as an excuse? So am I
just a paranoid, suspisous, bitch or is there any truth to this theory?
I'm really not so sure what to think about tribute bands, so I'm asking your opinion. There's nothing wrong with honoring a band's music, in fact I'm all for it, It's just that
it seems somewhat a disrespect towards the band/diceased musician to be playing their original music after they're dead. I think maybe when the musician dies, their music should not be played anymore ( I mean live, not on a CD) just because it was their own
music. But as I said, I'd like hear more opinions on the matter. So what do you think?

svelteboy's comment posted July 13th @ 8:12 AM: i think a lot of decent musicians get tempted into forming tribute bands because there is a good regular income from a genuine demand for well known music. i think its sad, but if you have a scruffy pub/club in the middle of nowhere and people want music they know, u cant afford, say, pink floyd, so you hire the austrailian pink floyd show and everybodys happy. i dont think its disrespectful, i think the bands that do covers do so with a genuine sense of love for the music they cover, but i think if u have a band that plays well its a waste not to write original material.but hen, ifu wanna make a living at bein a muso, u tend to take what u can get paid for. i can see why they do it, kinda wish they wouldnt. thats what i think.
yep.except no one should be a meat loaf covers band. or play his cds. EVER. urgh. just cos its crap. hehehehehehehehehe! |

davedrunken's comment posted July 22nd @ 12:47 AM: Two sides to this. First side is cool, some of these bands really are paying tribute to great musicians. Other side is Sad with a capital"S". This is for the bands that are doing "tribute" to musicians who are alive and maybe kickin'. These guys are just makin' a fast buck. I played in a few different cover bands but, never would resort to the whole tribute thing. I would never try to recreate my heroes. Would they still be, then? |

cougaa's comment posted July 22nd @ 8:54 AM: On one hand I think it is cool on the other, I think as a musician, if you worked your ass off and made it with your original music why should some one else profit from your work? I sometimes think bands like that are trying to steal the band they are tributing's glory...
My Thoughts..

A440's comment posted July 22nd @ 10:19 AM: What about bands and singers that do cover versions of other bands songs living or dead !!!! |
|
davedrunken's comment posted July 22nd @ 6:50 PM: First, there are two different types of bands mentioned(tribute and cover). Not the same thing. Playing 40 cover tunes a night was the only way to get steady gigs where I grew up. Necessity, I guess. Here's my opinion. Write and perform your own shit. Period. Then, if you want to cover a song or two, pick a tune that you not only love but, can do justice to the artist who orignally wrote and performed it. Just my thoughts.... |

I SAW BEATLE MANIA- like 14 years ago. tottally worth it. also SAW AN ALICE AND CHAINS cover band. they were on point. Maybe one day we'll actually get to see a STONES cover band that can do the writing justice. but... i think... the best person to ever do covers....
ROD STEWART. HIS AMERICAN SOUND BOOK albumns are tight. and right now Micheal Buble~ he's got some dope tracks. like "dean martin's" (sway), also redone by the PCD..
when and if i decide to go my ways from rap (like when i'm 45) I'm gonna be a crooner. call me like POWDER SINATRA! |

A440's comment posted July 25th @ 7:21 PM: Hi,well I did a cover of "Love Potion No 9" with my band Hard Road back in 1976 here in Canada and we did pretty well, the flip side of the 45rpm was an original, yes do your own stuff and keep it rockin'Art Murphy. |

420girl69's comment posted July 26th @ 3:51 PM: Yeah i'm okay with covers, as long as they do justice to the original band, and that the song was good to begin with. In some cases they can actually be better than the original. Except when it's Britney Spears, in that case it's horrible. But I like Gwen Stefani's 'rich girl' (kinda, tho it's not really my taste). |

Bushwars's comment posted December 27th @ 6:44 AM: I'm an old guy and I saw the Original Lynard Skynard in 1974. Last year My wife, Son (IN Pic), and I went to see the New Lynard Skynard. They have one original member and the singer is the brother of the original singer. The music was OK but the brother couldn't hit any of the high notes in the old songs and would turn the mike to the crowd in those places. I've heard club bands that sounded better on those covers. In defense the orignal band was bettered by the warm-up band The Charley Daniels Band (No shame there though).
I went to see Foghat for the third time a few years ago 1 original member and they sounded as good or better than the record.
And Bad Company in 1990 1 original member (Went to see the warm-up band Damn Yankees) also sounded just like the records.
I would just like to say if you have a ole time big name you should and can hire the best musicians to put out a product equal to the original in every way but creativity and Tribuite bands should be helt to that. |
