Philosophy
Punk rock is two different things... a ying and a yang... a smart and an (intended) dumb side. the smart, college educated, political side all started with the Velvet Underground with their lyrics about life as a drug addict and sexual degenerates. the dumb, three-chord, 'we-cant-play'side started with richie valens' la bamba and until the stooges only occasionally surfaced (louie louie among other songs)In the late seventies the smart side was embodied by the clash while the dumb side got represented by the ramones. the most famous punk band ever, the sex pistols, combined the smart side's lyrics with the dumb side's way of playing. So did nirvana. the pop punk bands of today sadly get it all wrong by playing dumb lyrics with pretend-smart music. in conclusion, WE NEED A NEW NIRVANA/CLASH /PISTOLS/ RAMONES!!!

Hmmmm I don't think many people consider Nirvana punk. But dually noted on the subject of needing bands like The Clash. I'd hope for some more Velvet Underground, Dead Kennedys and Discharge too... Pop-punk is really shitting on the face of the term "punk" these days. Nobody seems to know what the real term means anymore.
