the origins of blue tarp come from tyger and old youth. tyger was a band that grew from the original "ridgeway martin", composed of bill carpenter and steve hastie, who played together and composed original music starting in sun valley high school, green ridge, pennsylvania. this musical association continued through their association at the university of pennsylvania, circa 1969-1973, during which time i, richard carpenter (now "blue tarp") joined bill and steve for gigs at such places as laterrasse, as house band on weekends, and other venues in west philadelphia during the seminal period known generally as "the early 70's".
tyger, through the association with manager ted fink recorded an untitled 1st album at sigma sound studios, philadelphia, produced by bobby martin. 100 copies of this lp were pressed, and dispersed through a promotional tour which extended from philadelphis to the shores of truro, cape cod, and the smoky environs of "the sword in the stone" club in boston, massachusetts.
if i may digress for a moment, i must state here that the members of this band, tyger, like many artists, were oblivious to the vivisitudes of vainglorious advancement. in fact, we purposefully dissed people from the press who came to review our performances. i suppose this must be accounted for within the "anti-establishment" nature of artistic expression that was occuring at the time. in any case, 1 of tyger's memorable achievements was the production and performance of a rock opera, "mt. angus", composed by steve hastie.
the musical presentation of tyger was:
bill carpenter, guitar & vocals
steve hastie, guitar & vocals
richard carpenter, violin & backup vocals.
the songs were composed by bill & steve
----------------------------------
bill and steve later continued with an electrified, and seminal ensemble "flambeau", after i departed for familial and artistically philosophical ruminations which to be honest transcend any presently available verbal description.
----------------------------------
bill and i, always closely distant brothers, reconvened in seattle as "old youth". we played a recordedly memorable gig at "folk life" seattle, circa 1990. songs from this gig may be available in the future. hey...
----------------------------------
to make a long story short, bill died august 31, 2001. he saved his 2 youngest sons from a riptide at nehelm beach, oregon, but could not make it back to shore.
----------------------------------
my EP, "blue tarp demo man", was recorded 2 years later, August 2003.
----------------------------------
addendum: hey, if you guys like my music, thank you! in fact, it is likely that i will record again soon, since i am no longer teaching (at least as of this writing) philosophy (my other deep passion). in fact, i categorize philosophy as a form which envelops the sense of music.
the form is not as accessible as the sense. and so it is with philosophy and music. in their inception, however, they are (ideally) the same. writing and realizing that fact makes it easier for me to accept the otherwise ridiculous, if not absurd realities of our current experience.
