Boyzone's first ever appearance was on Gay Burn's the late late show, swinging their hips to the backing track "Burn baby burn" was the first ever appearance from the Irish five some.
The band was materialised in 1993 when a young Irish lad by the name of Shane Lynch decided to put together an Irish boy band. He collaborated with manager Louis Walsh and started to audition members for the band. Six members were chosen from the thousands of lads that turned up, due to over pressure and un cooperative members six became four. A stand by member was then called up to re audition and all of the lads agreed that these were the boys who were going to make it big.
Five young Irish boys set out for super stardom; Ronan Keating, Stephen Gately, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Mikey Grayham became Boyzone. Their first single “Love me for a reason” was released in 1994 and smashed into the charts breaking little girls hearts! They won the Smash Hits award for best newcomer in 94’ and were on their way.
Several top five singles spawned; “Key to my life” and “So Good” both reached number three. Then the release of Cat Steven’s “Father and Son,” which hit the number two spot, finally their first number one hit came in December 1996 with the cover of the Beegees’ hit “Words.” All four of Boyzone’s albums were number ones; “Said and done”, “A Different Beat”, “Where we belong” and “By request.” They then later released an album of their singles.
There was increasing thought that Ronan Keating led the band, so in 1999 after their last single Ronan split from the band and Boyzone were no more. Ronan is currently still in the music business as a solo artist, Stephen recorded “Bright Eyes” for the television programme Watership Down. Keith Duffy is working on his acting career and is in the popular programme Corrie. Shane Lynch produced a single with Keith called “Girl you know its true”, which was a flop but now has thankfully rally driving instead. And Mikey Grayham is song writing and hoping to come back into the business.
