Hymns and Songs by Brent Holl
- a musical project using hymns from "The Hymnal: A Worship Book"
Five years ago, I was invited to help provide creative music resources to the 8:30 worship service at the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren. Intrigued by the opportunity to seek new forms of expression, I explored "The Hymnal: A Worship Book for innovative and inspirational songs and hymns.
During my exploration, I found multi-national folk songs, Gregorian chants, traditional church hymns and contemporary tunes. Early creative attempts included drumming; fiddle, whistle, and gospel-style piano arrangements; acapella, canons, and sing-a-longs; and even egg shakers distributed among the congregation members! I was drawn to the songs in the hymnal that worked well on my 12-guitar,and I now use more than 100 in a special collection for the early service.
Of course, singing and playing instruments has always been an important part of my family life. My family always sang and listened to music; especially the hymns and early gospel songs (including those in the "new" hymnal) and the musical efforts of my siblings were always encouraged.
I hope this recording will generate interest in songs of the church and keep the sense of discovery alive as we, seek to worship together in ways that encourage our spiritual growth.
