Johannesburg - She thought to herself there was no way she would give her
Heloise Matthee, 58, told on Monday how robbers attacked and injured her and her husband, Braam, 61, while they were praying.
Braam Matthee said on Monday: "Satan hates this place. It is God against Satan and Satan is their instigator."
The robbers attacked the couple on Sunday night when they were sitting and praying in the House of Wisdom and Prayer in Muldersdrift.
Matthee was injured in his left upper arm and had to have an operation on Sunday night to repair the splintered bone. His wife was hit in her right shoulder.
Matthee is a well-known businessman in the area and owner of Bergvlei Estates.
He and his wife are also founder members of the prayer house, situated just before the Pinehaven offramp to Pretoria on the R28.
26 burglaries in a year
"It is a place of intense prayer," Matthee said on Monday from his hospital bed in Krugersdorp Private Hospital.
On Monday, Matthee said that there had been 26 burglaries at Bergvlei and the prayer house in the past year.
"The prayer house does not have keys. The doors are always open so that anyone can come to pray at any time.
"We heard how the dogs barked in three different places in the area in the past few nights. Then we knew there were three gangs attacking at the same time in the area.
"My wife and I were praying on Sunday night. I got up just after 21:00 to go to the bathroom. Suddenly, two men came in the door.
"At first, I thought they were worshippers, but then they shoved me back into the prayer house and pushed me flat on the ground. A fight started and then one of them shot me, breaking my arm."
His wife said she was sitting on the floor when one of the robbers came and sat right in front of her.
"He said I must give him my jewellery otherwise he would shoot me. I had only one ring on my finger, my 'Jesus ring'.
Robber fired two shots
"Then I hit him with the torch, using all my strength. After that, I tried to reach a bag of books to hit Braam's attacker, but the other robber hit me. Then I was flat on the floor."
The robber fired two shots, one of which hit Matthee in the shoulder.
They fled in Matthee's vehicle, but only a few metres away the anti-hijack system kicked in and the vehicle stopped.
Mrs Matthee phoned her daughter on her cellphone, and she took them to hospital.
