Well, we are still at it. the new project is taking a lot more time than we thought. It's okay though - we have been taking this project very seriously. All the siongs you hear here are just a flock-o-singles we recorded over the years. We ahve created CD's from them and gave them out as promo pieces and such. This will be our first Indie release. Soooo - we have been careful about the continuity of the songs and how they work as a whole.n We also are thrilled to have Corey Wilkins joining us on key boards, guitars and vocals Goggle the guy on Myspace - this young guy can rock. Its an honor for us old guys to have him join us. Billy will be back on sax and my son and friends - the horn section- will as well.
Just a note: Eric's not old but he is prety serious. ;)
When we get it done we will let everyone know - loudly!!!

Not much new to report. The band has picked out and arranged all the new material for the next album. We;re all pretty excited about the direction we are heading. So it's rehearsals for a bit and then into the studio. I'll post up some preview mp3's as they are mixed.

Okay! Everything is goofy these days but the band is still at it. I watch all the nonsense going on every day in Washington and I think I have fallen down the rabbit hole into Wonderland.
My God has the Mad Hatter and the March Hare taken over. Maybe it's just a flashback and I'll wake up and all will be well.
We have been writing and trying to find a sound and style that will best represent what the band is about. It's kinda cool in that we always just recorded whatever we were playing and that was good enough. Eric has insisted that we have a solid concept that will convey our artistry - wow is that cool or what. I have written a slew of new songs and I have had a ball writing with Eric and Rick with some fabulous results. It's taken a long time and we are six months off our timeline but I think it will be worth it. Stay tuned. Bobby hasn't been able to take so many vacations so that allows us more time to work. I don't know whether it's the economy or just the fact that he has real love in his life - whatever keeps him around.

We are still at it!
We are in the studio again. We have never released an CD for sale and we decided to get serious about doing just that. If you noticed we are pretty eclectic and we had to sit down and figure out what genre we want to deliver. We have decided to go a lot more toward a harder'Rock' but it will have it's quirkiness because we are doing it. It should be interesting as to what comes out. I would love any opinions you all my have. E-mail me at theoldman@theburningsageband.com if you aren't comfortable writing on the site. Look for the CD in all the usual places in the fall.
Another project has come up for me. (Ken) My son and a group of gifted young jazz guys want to sit down, write and record some songs. The idea being in the vein of 'Redbone' sort of that old timey blues sound. We were looking at Depression Era music with a little up tempo/jazz feel. I'm looking forward to that.

Updates
The Storyteller E-zine
Just a note to update the bands doings. We have been working on a new project and have been rehearsing to start doing shows. Our attention has been on studio projects and we have let the need for playing to an audience slip away. Time for a us to get out there. I shamelessly posted my web site- our music is there as well and my other passion is also played out. If you like to read and are a fan of the weird- have fun. I also posted some new unplugged stuff.I'm working on a 'Lite' album. This time full files- have a listen.

names
I was asked to ID the guys in the band.
The cool young turk in the shades is Eric-on bass.He's now our music director. He helps to make us old guys be a bit more up to date. The handsome bald headed ace is Rick-my brother. We started playing together in 1963- that was the year we started 'SomethingNu'. We fancied ourselves the answer to the British invasion. We did a lot of R&B- four of us sang-just guitars/no horns, as was the norm in those days.My God, we gigged constantly in those days. We even released a ridiculous surfin' single that got a little regional air play.It was great fun going up to LA and recording at Sunset Studios( two 4-tracks and a record cutter for demos( state of the art)
The dapper fellow in the back( With Hair) is Bob- our drummer. A great friend and a man with an ideal life style. He's a photographer and whines terribly if he can't take 5 vacations a year.
The fat old man with the hat on is me.
I have graced stages from all up and down the west coast, down in Texas, and a few desert hot spots. Most I don't remember very well- but that is a common ailment for those of us who lived at that time.My son busted me on a little excursion we made to put Bill Graham to rest out in the desert.It was a little fuzzy- it seemed like a good thing to do at the time. I even had a short bout in the big leagues-put I doubt many would remember me.Opening acts were politly recieved and quickly forgotten unless their record took off.I have been writing and performing for over forty years.And it is still a blessing to be able to do it.By the by,I was pretty ill when this picture was taken/ I miraculously healed and am down to 200 pounds and too pretty to stand.'cept I'm an old guy.Thanks to all for having a listen. Any one wanting us to come and play drop a line- We are gigging again, though southern California is pretty rough for finding stages to play/ not like the old days.This pay-to-play thing sucks.We are going to start another project this year, so we will post new stuff.

New Accoustic short bits
I put a couple more songs up. 'Rain all night' and'Red Bone'. I chose them because we did them as a band and I thought it might be interesting to see what the listeners thought of the differences.Write me and give me your thoughts.

New Stuff
Just a note to tell you of same new uploads. I put two older tunes on the sight. 'Who He Meets' and "A Thousand days" have a listen. It's interesting to see what a few years will do to the music.
Time and experience do change the creative output. I was asked to put up some acoustic pieces-'Jon Penny/unplugged' is me playing the way I wrote it. And 'When The Rain Stops' is an 20 year old piece. It seems to hold up. I'll add more unplugged stuff if there is interest.

What's it all for?
I was having an uninteresting conversation with myself the other day. The subject, with myself, was what drives us to do what we do.'See me'that drive to sucess can become all consuming and destructive. We stand in the world and wonder why the creator put us here. What has the people in our lives show up? All of us have gifts and it's a blessing when we can make a living from that gift. I have been a musician and writer/composer since high school and even turned down a contract with MGM back in the seventies.(Another story for another day.)I would play and perform, record and write but construction was the way I made a living-the 'see me'did not work or at least didn't drive me as concerns my art. As much as I love performing , writing and singing I chose to keep it an avocation. Now, later in my life I look to see the relevance of what I do and I find that the joy of creating music has taken on a new energy.Instead of an ego driven approach the music itself is the dynamic- the reason for doing what I do. I believe it to be a truer barometer to life and a joy. The songs are more real and communicate in a clearer way.(I trust) Perhaps the muse finds an easier path if you get out of the way.In any event it's a good exersise to examine the whys of what we do. I would be curious to know what drives other artists,performers,writers to do what they do.

We are real pleased to be on this site. We are some olderguys that don't know how to be retro since we still play the same kinda stuff we always have.I've got three mp3s up more to come .We have two albums done and some single guitar /voice stuff.To our new fans thanks it is an honor to have you enjoy what we do.
