Calvin Mark Smith has been involved in music in the New England area for most of his life. He has written and played in just about every genre from R&B, Soul, Top 40, Jazz, and Fusion to Rock and Country. A native to the New England area, Calvin has played in various musical settings throughout his life. From piano recitals and drum lessons as a child to opening for some very well known artists. Calvin has had the experience of playing with some of those artists. While primarily a drummer and percussionist, Calvin has broadened his musical expression by adopting other instruments and various software applications to enhance his musical approach. Recently, Calvin has taken to writing, arranging and music production.
The current Cd project “Feelings, Thoughts & Visions” takes some of his personal experiences and exposes them for general consumption. The title track, “Feelings, Thoughts & Visions,” is reminiscent of music he’d listened to as a teen developing a taste for Fusion and Jazz. Witness, if you will, the pent up frustration of “Just How It Is” as it relates to teen angst and just what emotions and vibes emanate. Then finally getting things properly aligned in your world by “Steppin On It” and just feeling good about yourself. The funky “Rearview Mirror” takes it back to house parties with the black lights and smoke-filled rooms. “October Groove” is simply a nod to his birth month and how slow and groovy everything is at that time of year. “Why Not” is for the love of guitar-laden tracks and just makes you feel like getting up and doing the Bump! From the bass-thumping “Cutting Class” to the fusion-inspired “Something To Remember Me Bye.” Can anyone relate and or appreciate the melancholy involved in reliving ones’ life through music? The track “Passionate Haze” is a nod to the many lovers out there that truly believe that love is tangible, befuddling and beautiful all at the same time.
Though this is purely an instrumental release, Calvin gives the music room to breath and grow on you. This collection of songs is eclectic and moving, which makes them at once memorable and amusing. Hopefully the fruits of his labors will be evident (if not fun to listen to) in the music that is shared on this CD.
