When David Crosby (CSNY) first heard Wammie™ Award winner Carey Colvin, he said, “Definitely give up your day job!” Carey’s warm, expressive, and powerful vocals “draw you into her world with grace, humor, and panache” (Richard Fox, WCUW-FM, Worcester, MA). Her award-winning debut album, The Distance Wall, is a compelling recording with award-winning songs that feature an effervescent concoction: A dash of blues, rock-edged pop, and pop-influenced contemporary folk.
While she is available as a solo performer, Carey for the most part performs in a duo format with her husband and musical partner Granger Helvey on electric bass and vocals. She received the 1997 Wammie™ Award for Folk-Contemporary Female Vocalist, the 2000 Wammie™ Award for Debut Recording of the Year, and the pair have received several nominations in other categories over the years including Female Rock/Pop Vocalist, Male Rock/Pop Vocalist, Rock/Pop Instrumentalist (Granger), and Folk-Contemporary Duo/Group. Carey has also received awards for her songwriting skills in the Folk, Alternative, and Rock categories. In February 2003, she was listed with artists to watch in Washingtonian Magazine.
Described as a songwriter with an intelligent approach to her lyrics, Carey has been a featured performer on stages such as Writer's Night at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, TN; The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA, opening for CPR (David Crosby, Jeff Pevar, James Raymond); the Cellar Door Stage for Styx and Pat Benatar at the Nissan Pavilion outside Manassas, VA, and The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. She has been a Featured Artist on radio stations nationwide, including WUWF-FM (Pensacola, FL), KABZ-FM (Little Rock, AR), KPFA-FM (Berkley, CA), WHFS-FM (Washington, DC), Whole Wheat Radio (Talkeetna, AK), and Car Talk (NPR). Carey was interviewed for features in two books: Complete Guide to House Concerts: And Other Satisfying Alternative Venues, and Girls Rock!: Fifty Years of Women Making Music. Her artistic skills extend to web and CD design, and the duo are involved in event production from all aspects, including booking, stage management, technical/sound, and scriptwriting.
Carey returned to the studio in 2003 to begin recording her next CD, Let It Flow. Guest artists include Jeff Pevar (CPR, CSN, Ray Charles), Jon Carroll (Mary Chapin Carpenter), and more. She plans a 2006 release.
In 2003, Carey and Granger relocated to Navarre, FL from the Washington, DC area, where the winters are very cold. In 2004, Hurricane Ivan hit Navarre almost straight on and kicked them in the behind for their smugness over moving to a warmer climate. (Let's not even talk about the other hurricanes since Ivan, and the new roof on their house.) On a musical semi-hiatus since their move and only performing intermittently during that time, they are now re-emerging and are currently booking for 2006 and beyond.
