Carl Ashley Rapheal Barat was born on the 6th of june 1976 in Basingstoke.
As a youth, his time was often divided between his mother, his work at an armaments factory and his father.
Barat\'s mother was a member of the commune-dwelling counter culture and peace groups. for a large part of his childhood Barat lived on commune in somerset with his mother.
In 1996 Barat was taking a drama degree in Brunel University. There He met a young girl named Amy Doherty with whom he got on well. Amy soon introduced Carl to her brother Peter and the two cemented a close relationship. Together Pete Doherty and Carl formed a mythical veiw of British arcadia, which they called \'Albion\'.Albion was equally populated by Dickensian Gentlemen and cockney wise-boys. The duo also fomed The Libertines, a band in which Doherty and Barat shared singing and songwriting duties, alongside bassist John Hassal and Gary Powell on drums.
\'Up the bracket\', the band\'s debut album was released in 2002 to great critical acclaim. The band became famous almost instantly due to their volatile performances which include the frontmen fighting, sharing microphones and kissing. In 2003 however doherty\'s drug became intolerable for his bandmates, most of all Barat, and eventually doherty was asked to leave the band. in the summer of 2003 doherty broke into Carl\'s flat and stole several items including an NME award. He was sentenced to 6 months in prison, soon shortened to three. on his day of release Barat welcomed Doherty back into the band.
when recording the lib\'s second album, security guards had to be hired to keep Barat and Doherty from fighting. Barat later admitted that \'It\'s a miracle the album was even finished\'. After the album\'s release Doherty was once again forced to leave the band and he went on to form Babyshambles, which Barat labels as \'pete\'s denial band\' as they appear unphased by doherty\'s drug use. In december 2004 Barat completely disbanded The libertines for two reasons: (i) he felt it was wrong to continue the band without doherty and (ii) he was suffering from an \'on going illness\', which many close friends believe was a combined result of personal and professional stress and his alcoholism, which his friends say he developed in 2003 when his relatonship with doherty was faltering.in 2005, Carl underwent surgery to remove a tumor from behind his ear.
In Feburary 2005, Barat signed a solo deal with vertigo records and now regularly has DJing duties at his London club Dirty Pretty Things. |
