Chris Cagle was born in Louisiana, but when he was only four years old; his family moved to the outskirts of Houston, Texas. When he was six, Cagle began playing the guitar, but he quite less than a year later. It was not until high school when he began learning the instrument again. Also while in high school, Cagle focused on singing, and he learned the piano. He then became a student at University of Texas at Arlington. In 1994, when Cagle was only 19 he dropped out to move to Nashville, Tennessee in order to pursue a music career. During this time, the singer also had various jobs in order to make enough money to survive: construction work, bartending, caddy. One night, while he was bartending, Cagle offered to pay the tab for a customer who had forgotten his wallet. The customer ended up being the credited Nashville songwriter, Harlan Howard. Howard became interested in Cagle and eventually published some of the singer’s songs. Cagle also had a second strike of luck while working in a restaurant. He met Donna Duarte. Duarte was the assistant to the president of Virgin Records Nashville. She introduced Cagle to Virgin Records’ president. He was very impressed with Cagle, and signed him to the company. Cagle’s debut single, “My Love Goes On an On,” peaked in the top 20 on the Billboard Country Charts.
In October 2000, Cagle released his debut album entitled Play it loud. The album contained the top 40 hit, “Laredo.” Cagle also did a cover of the 1997 David Kersh song, “I Breathe In, I Breathe Out.” Soon after the album’s release, Cagle switched to Capitol records. In June 2001, Capitol records re-released Play It Loud with two bonus tracks. In April 2003, Cagle released his sophomore album entitled Chris Cagle. The album debuted on the Billboard Country charts at number one. The single, “What a Beautiful Day,” did very well. The song, “Chicks Dig It,” was on the Billboard Country chart in December 2003.
