| It was a time when music was bursting out of its box. A time when creativity was rampant, as was social change, and political upheaval. It was the time when “Bitches Brew”, and “Jack Johnson” morphed into “Mysterious Traveler”
and “Head Hunters”. Sounds were electric, beautiful and abrasive. It was wide open....
That time was the late 60’s into the early 70’s . Miles was changing music (again).... and forever. Joe Zawinul was creating an electric sound that no human had ever heard. Herbie was combining the wild chromaticism of the Miles groups with the boisterous funk of the Bay area. Jazz was influenced by Bird, Trane, and Jimmy Hendrix! As a country, we had landed on the moon, as artists we were headed for the next galaxy.
There was a feeling in the music then. This is what we- in “Cique”, are attempting to capture with this debut CD. Open, interactive funky and daring music ......this is our goal. If you were there, maybe it will conjure up some memories, if not, maybe you can get a little of this time by chilling with this music.
On a personal note, we are fortunate to have John Abercrombie playing on this project with us. John is a true giant and an original. As an artist he explored sound, texture, and improvisation in a fresh and new way which inspired an entire generation of musicians who followed. Thank you John, for sharing that with us.
We hope you enjoy this music, and after listening, we hope you say what we say at every gig.....that was SICK! (CIQUE).... |
