ECEG signs a recording/publishing agreement with CORD (02/08/2006)
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Emerald City Entertainment Group (emeraldcityeg.com) today announced the signing of a recording/publishing agreement with CORD (cordmusic.com), one of the leading rock bands from Austin, Texas. Dubbed “one of the top 5 homegrown rock bands of Austin” by 101X KROX, CORD brings a memorably distinctive pop rock sound to the Emerald City catalog.
Twenty-five year old Cord Carpenter, the band’s front-man and singer/songwriter, brings a repertoire of more than 75 original songs to the ECEG Music Publishing Company catalog. While Carpenter’s southern-influenced songwriting is often compared to the likes of Jakob Dylan (Wallflowers), Chris Martin (Coldplay), and Dave Groll (Foo Fighters), his inspirations span the gamut from Jackson Browne to Neil Young, The Who to Iain Anderson, and Bruce Hornsby to Johnny Cash.
ECEG Records and CORD will select an initial ten songs from his repertoire which will be produced into a full-length release by Daniel Duerr and Rich Williams at the company’s recording studio in Santa Cruz, California during February/March, 2006. The album will be released digitally in the spring 2006 with distribution through IODA (iodalliance.com), followed by a physical release in late summer/fall 2006 with distribution through Bayside Entertainment Distribution (baysidedist.com).

BIO:
Cord Carpenter started his music career playing solo acoustic shows as a college student in Sequin, TX.
Inspired by artists that span several decades, Cord played for a wide-range of audiences with only his guitar, harmonica and his unique voice. His urge to add more instruments to his ensemble would soon be the start of the band called CORD.
In 2001 Cord found a solid beat keeper in Johnny Villarreal, a fellow student in Sequin. Johnny has played drums ever since he could walk and found the perfect fit to his style in Cord's songwriting. Together they would soon find solid guitarist Pat Roberts in nearby Austin to fill the lead position. After a couple of years of establishing themselves with friend and bassist Josh Recio, they decided to part ways to begin a new chapter in Cord. After taking no time at all in looking for the right fit to complete the rhythm section, they found seasoned musician and bassist, Todd Meador. With a new line-up and new dedication to their craft, Cord has been re-charged and has taken giant steps in building their sound and their fan-base in 2005. A hot night in July found CORD releasing their new CD "Who You Know" to a crowd of over 400 at Stubbs in Austin Texas. Selling over 250 copies in that one night proved to Cord that they were here to stay in the Austin music scene, and were now on the radar of many labels and industry professionals.
With songs that are to the point and choruses you can't get out of your head, the music of CORD has been spreading throughout Texas and is soon to invade the rest of the world. The band grows with each show, justified by the growing fan-base, but all those who have heard the music know that this is only the beginning...
CORD recently signed with Emerald City Entertainment Group and will be releasing a new record this summer, as well as hitting the road on a national tour.

When I don't like a CD, I can tell you about a million reasons why it didn't impress me. But when I adore a CD, like Seguin-based band Cord's self-titled EP, I am usually so smitten that I'm at a loss for words.
Though reminiscent of current vocalists like Jason Wade of Lifehouse, Cord Carpenter, the band's namesake and lead vocalist, has a memorably distinctive melodic growl. The music itself is in the same vein as pop rock powerhouse like Creed and Collective Soul, but less grandiose, and like Matchbox Twenty, but more inspired.
Save the lackluster production quality, this album is practically radio-ready. I can't even really blame the band for that, though. For a locally and largely self-produced CD, it's quite impressive. It's not a full album and not a short EP. The six songs on the CD seem like a tease for something more to come, and I can't wait to hear what next. (A)

I made a fresh pot of coffee this morning and sat back while I listened to the CD. What can I say? I love it! There's nothing more pleasant than reviewing a CD that you can actually get into. With the slow yearning vocals atop brooding arrangements, the music weaves an eccentric web of sounds - certainly the type of music that is capable of stirring the college radio airwaves.
The best thing about the album is its ability to surprise. Both the arrangements and the collection of songs themselves are delightfully unpredictable. From the narcotic falsettos of 'This Time' to the driving cadence of the Pete Yorn-reminiscent 'Make It', this CD presents quite the impressive repertoire. While every song is worthy of praise, my personal favorite off the album has to be 'This Time'. With its tranquilizing arrangement and array of heavenly feedback, this hypnotic little number drags itself along like a night on Xanex. This is the type of track I could listen to on a quiet, introspective evening drive. That being said, I really dig their style.
>>Gypsy Wind Ent. 2005
Cord is one of the most original sounding bands I have heard in some time. They have a UK tone with an American rock swagger. They are solid, energetic musicians with a desire to actually make it out of the pool and into the "A" lineup with acts that all have that certain something that will carry them far beyond the Texas bar rounds.
>>John Warden, President Rive Video
Cord is one of the best bands I watched the entire time there (SXSW 2005). Musically on the money...just good radio songs.
>>L.I.Z. Notorious Radio
I just listened to "Who You Know" and I really dig it. It sounds REALLY good!! There's some Dinosaur Jr. mixed with Radiohead and some others in there too. Good stuff. |
