Cory Michael Phillips is an Aries who writes and plays music. He's lived in Los Angeles since 2003, but was raised in the South Texas coastal town of McAllen and became a man in beautiful Lawrence, Kansas. Cory has fronted various supporting bands over the past six years, including: Panacea, Nub, the New World Gypsies, California, and now, Superolve.
"What people love about Cory Phillips is his authenticity. He is the poet of our age who happens to be just as gifted at writing unforgettable music to deliver it in. He is a gypsy who still dances with the muses and whose presence is a celebration of living. His authenticity lies where art meets the dreams that connect the ideal with the everyday."
- Steven Danner, Personal Manager
Cory fronts an eight-piece touring band called Superlove. With their velvet touch, the music is soulful and harmony driven - where Jamiroquai meets Jeff Buckley. A sexuality seeps through the technically inspiring music, and Phillips rides that energy with the crowd for some electric and body-moving sets.
For the past two years, Cory has played all over Los Angeles in the Viper Room's and the Whisky a Go Go's. But for the most part, he has remained a Venice local, regularly playing Venice and Santa Monica clubs 14 Below and the Good Hurt. Very few outside his westside circle of friends have heard his name. But that may soon change.
Cory Phillips' debut solo LP will be released this Spring, and if all of the intricate preparations pay off, his first single will be playing in radios across the great United States in time to celebrate another year as a nation.
"Cory's debut release this summer will have a hard time finding an official home in the record store isles. His music is considered Soul Pop by Los Angeles' City Beat, but Angelian promoters in have consistently included Superlove with Southern Rock bands. His influences leave him with material that could you could consider alternative rock, R&B, and even country. This album has the potential to be a very popular one to a whole lot of people."
- Billy Piatt, Music Columnist
Cory Phillips' debut album is a story in itself. Through eight years as a professional musician, performing his music fronting five bands, he has never released an album. Before he left for Los Angeles he recorded his farewell concert at the Lawrence Arts Centre and released a 2-disc limited edition album (songs on the live sampler are from this album). But it could hardly be called a release. The album drought will soon end as Thermal Records releases Cory Phillips' self-titled debut LP.
Initially, the album is going to be offered up in the west coast to see if radio bites. Depending on the reception it receives, it will be re-released in the rest of the United States, Europe, Japan, and Australia. Everyone in camp Cory Phillips encourages the crossing of fingers :)
"Everything about modern music fuels my desire to live with this fever. From the 20's to today, I love it all. Soul music especially makes me dance and shake and scream and lose it. If you are not touched and dependent upon the feeling, I'm afraid you aren't a true leaf on its tree."
