Craig Ashley David was born on May 5, 1981 in Southampton, England. Growing up, he loved music and was highly influenced by R&B and Reggae. As a teenager, he performed on the local radio station, PCRS 106.5FM. He then began doing shows at local clubs. He soon met Mark hill, a member of Artful Dodger. Hill was impressed with David’s version of Damage’s “I’m ready,” and Human League’s “Human.” David’s own song, “Rewind,” soon became an underground hit as well as his single, “Fill Me In.” The single, ‘Fill me In,” became number one during the summer of 2000 in Britain. At only 19 years old, David had become Britain’s youngest male solo artist with a number one single. He soon signed to Windstar Records. His next single, “7 Days,” also became a smash hit .David’s debut album, Born To Do It, did very well. Scandal hit Craig David in February 2001, however. He had been nominated six times for the 2000 British Music Awards. These nominations included: Best British Male Solo Artist, best British Newcomer, and Best British Single (for “7 days”). The academy, however, snubbed the artist in all sic categories. People were outraged. Celebrities such as Elton john, U2, and Robbie Williams expressed their disgust at the inside politics that were being played. Later that year, Craig David was plagued with death threats. At one concert, in particular, during a spring show in 2001 a anonymous caller said that David would be injured by a soldier throwing tear gas and hand grenades at him while he performed on stage. David ignored the threats, and continued performing. Meanwhile, Born To Do It, continued to sell records. David soon got a deal with Atlantic Records to distribute the album in America. In the summer of 2001, Born to Do It was released in the United States. The album immediately received mainstream acclaim. Artists such as Missy Elliot, usher, and Beyonce Knowles were all saying that they were huge fans of Craig David. In November 2002, David released his sophomore album entitled Slicker Than Your Average. The album’s single, ‘What’s your Flavor?” became a pop hit.
