Cream: July 1966 - November 1968
Cream consisted of three amazingly talented musicians: Eric Clapton (guitar) Jack Bruce (bass) and Ginger Baker (drums). Clapton, 21 at the time, Bruce, 23 at the time, and Baker, the oldest at 26, had their first gig on July 23, 1966 at the Windsor Jazz & Blues Festival.
In October of 1966, they released their first single, “Wrapping Paper”. Cream then came out with their debut album, "Fresh Cream", released on Reaction Records, in December of 1966. The album contained great songs such as "NSU" and "Sweet Wine". They then released their second single, "I Feel Free" which put them at number 11 on the charts.
During the first part of 1967, Cream performed gigs around Britain and Europe then settled their sights on America. There, in New York's Atlantic Studios, Cream began work on their second album in May of 1967, titled "Disraeli Gears". The song "Strange Brew" off that album would become their second single, reaching number 17 in July of 1967. The album "Disraeli Gears" came out in November of 1967. "Disraeli Gears" made the top 5 in America and sold a million copies.
Sessions for Cream's third album titled "Wheels Of Fire" were spread from 1967 to 1968. The group got more time to spend in the studios then before, and as a result, they had a more sophisticated production. Brilliant songs such as "White Room" and my personal favorite, "Those Were The Days" along side "Deserted Cities Of The Heart" and "Politician" could be found on their "Wheels Of Fire" album. Eric Clapton co-wrote the song "Anyone For Tennis" with Martin Sharp for the soundtrack of the movie "The Savage Seven". "Anyone For Tennis" was also released as their single in May of 1968. "Wheels Of Fire" was released in August of 1968.
Cream also released the album "Live At The Fillmore" which contained four live tracks such as a 17-minute version of "Spoonful", "Toad" - a 16-minute drum solo, and the cover of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads".
Around late August of 1968, Cream had had enough of each other, and ceased to exist as a band. They grew tired of each other and decided on a farewell tour, which started in America, and ended in London's Royal Albert Hall on November 26, 1968.
Cream released their final album, entitled "Goodbye" in March of 1969, which included the great song "Badge". The "Goodbye" album topped the UK charts and made it to number 2 in the U.S.
Cream re-united to play one show in January of 1993 when they were inducted into the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame. That was the last of the legendary group, Cream.
