This 'spine-tinglingly' authentic and extravagantly theatrical production played recently to sensational acclaim with fans rushing on stage and Silvio & the band protected by security
"Karma Culture"
THE TUBE
Michael Metcalf, producer of GMTV and legendary 80’s series “The Tube” was also at the gig;
“Cirque de Silvio is a wonderfully glamorous show, a real Night Out! Silvio is a young artist with great energy and style. And his voice! Wow! Close your eyes – or even keep them open! By George, it’s George!”
Dee Dee Wilde (of Top Of The Pops legendary ‘Pans People’) said of Culture Dub after arranging a recent corporate event; “Thank you for the best, best party we’ve ever had. Culture Dub is way beyond ‘Tribute’ – it’s “Cirque de Silvio”
And thus a new name in the camp showbiz firmament was born!
PARTY TIME!
As soon as Phil Pickett teamed up with Culture Club again last year for the first time since the 1980’s he began to realise just how many people there were around the world who still loved the soulful, joyous and evocative music of Boy George & Culture Club – some of the songs, including one of the biggest hits of all time “Karma Chameleon” Phil co-wrote.
“To me, Culture Club & the 80’s was a fantastic party that should never have stopped. However as soon as I met Silvio (at auditions for the Boy George role) something just clicked” says Phil:
“I had to pinch myself! Although a good 20 years younger than George, the likeness vocally – and his colourful & outrageous personality gave me goosebumps! After having the good fortune to work with many great artists in my time including Robbie, McCartney, Take That and of course, Boy George – i think I know a true star when I see one"
Working with Silvio, Phil has produced a show he believes will thrill thousands of fans of 80’s music around the world in terms of its great entertainment value, attention to detail, camp extravagance - and pure fun!
"GLAMTASTIC!"
Silvio: “I loved, loved loved Boy George when I was growing up but never ever thought I’d actually get to play in a band that did these songs – with Phil who actually wrote my favourite song of all time, Karma. it’s a fantasy dream come true!….I wish I’d been around in the 80’s and think a lot of people are very sad George doesn’t want to do Culture Club any more - but am very proud to sing his songs and would love to meet him one day”
THE SHOW
Phil, (also founder member of 70’s M&S glamrockers, SAILOR - no, not S&M!) recently arrived back in the Brighton area from Spain & enlisted local hero – theatrical luminary & pyro expert Philip Rhodes of Tongue & Groove who helped realize the decadent vision behind the staging, costumes, special effects and filming of “Silvio’s Adventures In Wonderland”…a ground-breaking ‘Docu-Concert’ DVD and promo film of a recent live concert.
Scott Jaeger, an impressive video director, is responsible for the darkly innovative back projection, an strong feature of the live show, and one of Phil’s oldest friends, Henry Marsh from Sailor, is presently editing “Silvio’s Adventures”. In addition, a book of high quality promo images taken by another close buddy, Barry Ryan (these days an accomplished photographer) is in production (Paul & Barry Ryan were the 1960’s Boy Band precursors to WHAM - and Barry, vocalist on the timeless classic “Eloise”).
“It was an unforgettable experience” said Barry after the concert;“The band are really on to something here. The pictures I took are like a wonderful 1960’s “happening” with all the spirit and adventure of the Beatles “Magical Mystery Tour” – all very dreamy, cabaret and circus-like…..The show seems to add up to much more than the sum of the parts and for me, transcends the whole “Tribute” genre by miles. I loved it!”
Says pop journeyman & raconteur Phil;
“’Eloise’ is one of my favourite songs and have always been attracted to productions on an extravagant and spectacular scale, but as Barry often says, my trouble is I live like Frank Sinatra – but on Frank Ifield’s wages!”
Phil pays tribute to the ‘cast of thousands’ who have assisted in creating his dream of producing a truly “World-Class Spectacular 80’s Tribute Review” backed by some of the UK’s finest young musical talent;
“I don’t want to sound gushing but without the generosity help, encouragement and love (plus modest - and in some cases, non-existent invoices!) of friends like Terry Britten (Tina Turner’s writer & producer) Snake Davies, Henry Marsh, Martin Smith (of ELO) Pete May (Sir Cliff’s drummer – now Culture Dub’s) – and of course last but not least and the ultimate endorsement - Mikey Craig himself from Culture Club, it probably could never have happened”
SILVIO
Prior to hooking up with Phil and co, Silvio – a resident of Dudley in the Midlands (it’s other claim to showbiz connection being the home town of comedian Lenny Henry) desperate to become a star went along to the X-Factor auditions in Birmingham.
“I could never understand Simon Cowell’s comments on X-Factor – or for that matter Sharon Osbourne’s” says Phil; “But I guess even they get it wrong sometimes!”
(Simon Cowell on Silvio; “You will definitely never make it in this business – it’s far too outrageous and “out there!”)
IMPRESSARIO
Phil is not only out to prove them wrong but firmly believes Silvio has the talent to ultimately use “Cirque De Silvio” as a launch pad to further his ambitions as a performer and recording artist in his own right. "Silvio's energy and drive as well as a huge dedication to getting the show and the many flamboyant costumes just right has been key in making this project a huge success"
Pickett still remembers when he believed in the destiny of another unsigned artist many moons ago – that of a certain George O’Dowd when many said he was just ‘too camp’ to make it in the music business. How wrong they were!
Last words to Silvio:
“Music seems to be very serious these days and frankly, a little dull. It must have been amazing to be around in the 80’s – I’m really envious. But it’s 2007 now and am convinced there are millions of people out there who just want to be themselves again, let their hair down, get dressed up in outrageous clothes and PARTY!”
