A different kind of soul music is the best way to describe Dan McCoy's music. Performing live for nearly 20 years (his first live gig was at age 14) "Willoughby's favorite son" has his chops honed. Often being compared to Springsteen, Mellencamp and Petty but never sounding EXACTLY like any of them McCoy has a style all his own and puts nothing less than 100% energy into every performance.
McCoy's most current and successful endeavor is with the Alt.Country/Ameicana/Roots Rock band Rambler 454. Based out of Cleveland, Ohio the band has been receiving great reviews of their 3 discs and live shows. Opening slots have included the likes of Slobberbone, Charlie Daniels Band, John Eddie, The Black Crowes, Drive-By Truckers, Wilco, Trent Summar to name but a few. Chief songwriter McCoy writes from the heart and doesn't use fancy words to tell his tales of the every-man. Whether it's songs about lost Love, the trials of life or just road tripping the music provides short bursts of vivid imagery, slight imagination and a whole lotta heart!
Dan's solo material tends to vear more towards a bluesy side with open tunings, a little slide here and there and vocals that make you believe what he's saying is for real. "I'm currently putting songs together for a solo record I hope to have out in early '07. It will be along the lines of what Chris Whitely was doing in his career before he passed away. Chris is one of my favorite artists and ranks right up there with Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Van Morrison and any other great songwriter you can imagine to put on a list." McCoy adds, "I like to approach the solo stuff differently than the band material just so things remain fresh. Some of the stuff I write wouldn't neccesarily fit into a Rambler 454 set but it's just as fun and interesting."
