Dashboard Confessional is the musical project of singer, songwriter, and guitarist Chris Carrabba. Carrabba, who is from Boca Raton, Florida, grew up wanting to be a professional skateboarder. On his fifteenth birthday, his uncle gave him a guitar. Although he mastered the instrument, he put music on the back burner. It was not until after his high school graduation that he realized his love of music. He joined the punk rock group, Vacant Andys. Shortly afterwards Carrabba joined The Agency. He did not get success until he joined the group Further Seems Forever. The group had a song on the album, The Emo Diaries, Vol. 4: An Ocean of Doubt. The group then split an EP with band Recess Theories and released From the 27th State. After the release of The 27th State, Carrabba began playing low-key acoustic shows in various night clubs and bars. He decided to call his project, dashboard Confessional after a phrase in his song, “The Sharp Hint of New Tears.” He soon signed with Fidler Records, a small indie label. Dashboard Confessional then released their debut three song EP entitled The Drowning in 2000. Dashboard Confessional then released the album Swiss Army Romance. The record would later be re-issued through Drive Thru records. The album contained the single, “Screaming Infidelties.” That single would later become a major radio hit on alternative rock stations. Swiss Army Romance gained Carrabba a huge amount of underground talk. Thus, there was a bidding war for his record signing. Dashboard Confessional eventually signed with Vagrant Records. The 2001 album, The Places You Have Come to Fear The Most, was Dashboard Confessional’s debut with Vagrant. Later that year, dashboard confessional released the four track EP entitled, So Impossible. In 2002, Dashboard Confessional released the EP Summer’s Kiss. The EP contained four of Carrabba’s favorite songs from Swiss Army Romance re-done with a full band accompanying him. In 2002, Dashboard Confessional was featured on the MTV Unplugged DVD / Cd release. The DVD showed fans singing along to Carrabba as he sang “Screaming Infidelities.” During the summer of 2003, Dashboard Confessional released A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar. Dashboard Confessional has helped Emo become a widely accepted mainstream genre of music.
