The preamble to what would become The Datsuns occurred in 1997 when a group of friends hailing from Cambridge, New Zealand formed a group called Trinket. That year, the band won a local radio Battle of the Band contest. In 1998, Trinket changed their name to The Datsuns. They competed in the same Battle of the Band competition and won once again. The group then created their own record label entitled, Hell Squad Records. In March 2001, the group began touring Australia and then ventured into Britain. By Mid 2002, critics were calling the band ‘genius,’ and by July 2002, The Datsuns were signed to V2 Records. In February 2003, the group released their self-titled, debut album.
