First fronting a blues-based psychedelic rock group called Love Sculpture in the UK in the 60's (which scored with an unlikely 'mod' version of Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance"), Edmunds had a 1972 single go worldwide, namely his signature cover of the Dave Bartholomew song "I Hear You Knockin'". This update of the 1950's tune featured Edmunds playing almost every instrument in addition to singing, and was the main offering in the Album "Rockpile", produced by Edmunds to provide record stores with backup for the hit. "Rockpile" was also the name of the group he formed in 1977 with Billy Bremner and Nick Lowe, which cut three albums between '77 and '81. The first of these, "Get It", features the Edmunds take on Lowe's "I Knew The Bride When She Used To Rock And Roll", and the last of this trio, "Repeat When Necessary" contains a cover of Elvis Costello's "Girls Talk". Dave Edmunds' career leaned to production in the 1980's as he presided over the Stray Cats' moves up the charts and produced albums for Dion Dimucci, Nick Lowe and the first album of then-obscure K.D. Lang. He even contributed three songs to the soundtrack of the teen bathroom-humor flick "Porky's Revenge". At this writing, Edmunds' most recent album is from 1994, but we may not have seen the last of him. Rhino records anthologized his career in '93.
