David john matthews and his band of the same name started playing together around the early 90's (please don't ask me for any specifics) in the happin' town of charlotesville, virginia (c'ville, va.: home of uva, monticello and, i'm pretty, sure dave) They played in and around c'ville (bars, theatres, clubs) like "the warehouse" and some other places i can't think of their names, and dave actually worked in one of the bars, he started playing in, as a bartender - as a matter of fact it was at this bar that he met carter (percussions) and leroi (horns, etc.) who would play at the bar from time to time - the band also played in and around my favorite of all coasts: east coast (maryland, yey-yay!) David john matthews "dave" (lead guitar and vocals): born in s. africa, sometimes mistaken for tom hanks, coolest guy...ever! - carter beauford (percussion): i heard makes a mean omelette with mushrooms - boyd tinsley (violin): was last seen doing "jansport" adds because of his massive physique, cool dresser and big smile - stefan lessard (bass) married and has, i want to say 3 children, but i know of at least 1 (all, if just the one, with the same lucky lady), started playing with the band at the tender age of 16 - leroi "'roi" moore - (saxophone, etc.): wears sunglasses at concerts to maintain his stage fright. no, he's not blind Dave used to have a consistent pianist in the early years of the band but has since been playing without him, i can't think of his name, recently dave's been accompanied by butch taylor, keyboardist, most notably seen in "listener supported" (in stores now!) - and from time to time dave likes to mix things up a bit with back up vocals and guest appearances by bands like "blues traveller," "alanis morrisette (sp?)," "tim "'rey" reynolds," "bela fleck," "santana," - i mean, the list can go on and on... The band is most notable for not being labeled a specific type of music - but a combination of different kinds of world music like: blues, jazz, rock, country, etc...
Dave was born in s. africa but mainly raised in c'ville, i'm pretty sure all of the band, or at least carter and 'roi are natives of c'ville - and i'm sure they all have been influenced by the town, its music, and their own preferences Dave and his band have done a lot, and are responsible for a lot - they've kept on the "grateful dead" tradition of having people record their performances with no charge (in fact, that is how the band really got started getting popular by the circulating tapes, etc.)
...i suppose that's it. If you all really want to know more about and get a more in-depth bio of dave and his band i would suggest going to his OFFICIAL website at: http://www.dmband.com/ - or buy his biography The Dave Matthews Band: Step into the...! (it is from this biography that i got most of the information i know about dave) oh, and one more thing, if i made any mistake at all in this bio and some tool out there is so silly enough to get mad over it or what not, i apologize and feel free to make the correction(s), okay? thanks. have a nice day!
