The Deftones, one of nu-metals most revered artists amazing in a sense. The band is from the famous Sacramento, California, it was formed when the founding members Chino Moreno (vocals, guitar), Stephen Carpenter (Guitar), and Abe Cunningham (drums) met while skateboarding in 1988. Although only in high school they were able to afford money to pay for instruments when Carpenter was hit by a drunk driver and received a large amount of money from insurance ensuring the band a smooth ride financially. During their early years when their original bassist left they added Chi Cheng (bass) and Frank Delgado (DJ, Keyboardist). When they were just getting started the band would play small local shows for their main fan base consisting of mostly skateboarders. The band consists of smooth rock and roll rythyms and screaming rock vocals which is subsided by ever so more smooth rock vocals, and lyrics that are considered poetic their sense. Adding to the vocals and metal style are the sophisticated drums and controlled chaos of the whole band.
After a somewhat of a slow start the band signed with Maverick Records in 1994 when they released their debut album “Adrenaline”. When “Adrenaline” Delgado was not an official member but was heard on some tracks. Although their first album was not a complete success they began to collect fans and when they released their next album “Around the Fur” they had a very large fan base giving them a chance for some of their songs to be played on stations like MTV.
After putting out their first two albums they have put out two new albums and and album containg B-sides and rarities. Right now the Deftones are working on their next album which will be great as always.
\\\"Rock critics usually reserve a special place for Deftones above or at least away from the rest of the turn-of-the-century nu-metal movement. While they definitely share the influence of a group like Tool with peers like Korn, Deftones have always seemed more curious, more willing to incorporate traditionally revered sounds like dream pop or D.C. hardcore into their Northern California nu metal.\\\" - Johnny Loftus
